My name is Theresa Cole, and I'm the new Administrative Assistant at the Cheboygan Area Chamber! Born and raised in Northern Michigan, I've enjoyed the benefits and beauty of our wonderful area for over forty years.  After meeting my husband in 2005, we settled in Cheboygan with our five boys and have put down roots.  I'm proud of the community we live in and excited to be a part of this organization! Multi Team Hockey Tournament Coming to Cheboygan - Show your Support

We all know that Cheboygan is a Hockey Town, but believe it or not there are places that don't think of Cheboygan when they think of a city to travel to for Hockey Tournaments.  The Cheboygan Ice Pavilion has a group of volunteers that is working to change that.  This coming weekend will be the second weekend in a row that Cheboygan has hosted a multi- team hockey tournament on our ice.  And there are more tournaments on the horizon.  This weekend Feb 22-24 will see 12 different teams from all over the state come to experience Cheboygan and all that we have to offer.  Many businesses are displaying a special "Welcome Hockey Players" sign in their window to let those visiting families know that we love having them here.  The Chamber has distributed many of these signs but we know we did not get to everybody that may need one.  If you would like to show that your business is ready to cater to visiting hockey families, please print out a sign and place it in your window.  Who knows, maybe your business will be remembered as the best thing about visiting Cheboygan for Hockey.  We want to send them home with some great memories about Cheboygan away from the ice too.  Because, lets face it....Cheboygan is going to win the tourney, right?

FROM THE DESK OF
VALERIE L. WILLIS
CANDIDATE FOR US CONGRESS-SENATE
MICHIGAN 2020

Dear Chamber Member:
I am writing today announcing that I have established a NEW business relationship with a group of concerned Conservative Citizens that have formed a corporation called, AS THE SUN RISES.US
They are based in Michigan and what they do is they HELP PEOPLE. In fact, their Life Coaches and Staff, help people solve problems or help people through situations they find themselves in that they don't have the funds to solve the problem or cannot get out by themselves. So what ATSR does is lets say a Veteran who needs a home who is homeless and he can prove he had already been to the other help entities, such as the two we have here in town, but was turned down for help, he can come to ASTHESUNRISES.US and receive THEIR help. What this group does is raise money through their business sponsors selling products and donating the money to AS THE SUN RISES to help that person. And in turn, since this is NOT a FREE program, the person can volunteer to help offset the costs ATSR helps them with. This is called PAYING IT FORWARD. These people do not receive cash they receive the help asked for. People HELPING People! ... Click Here to Read Full Letter

It's Tax Time!

The charitable donation deduction allows you to lower your taxable income for donations or gifts to qualified, tax-exempt organizations. To get the deduction, you must file Form 1040, the form you use for an individual or joint income tax return. You also must itemize your deductions on Schedule A on Form 1040.
"If you are 70 ½, you can donate directly from your IRA to the charitable organization and it does not count toward your income.  It does count toward your RMD requirement."
The Straits Area Community Foundation has served Cheboygan County and Mackinaw City since 1998, and holds a collection of permanently endowed charitable funds supporting a broad range of nonprofits and causes. SACF works closely with donors to connect them with the causes they care about most, and to ensure those causes are cared for today, tomorrow, and forever. SACF is an affiliate of the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan (CFNEM), which holds combined assets of over $45 million. CFNEM serves as the administrative arm and through this partnership is accredited through the rigorous National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations for its affiliate foundations.  Please visit us at  www.sacf.net  for more information, how to donate, scholarship information, and how to apply for grants.

On the Road to a New Future

Will first started working with Michigan Works! through the WIOA Youth Program. He was homeless, living with his girlfriend's family, and trying to find a way to go back to school or at least get some other job training. He had attended a community college in Grand Rapids right out of high school, even playing on their baseball team, but after a year he could no longer afford his schooling. With no other financial help, Will was forced to quit school and get a job to try to make ends meet. As he was trying to find work, he began working Michigan Works! and their Out-of-School Youth Program. He also became dual enrolled in Michigan Works! WIOA Adult program as well. After working with Michigan Works! staff to research what career path he'd be interested in, Will decided he'd like to obtain his CDL. With help from Michigan Works!, Will was enrolled in the Road Warriors Truck Driving School...  Click Here to Read Full Press Release
