Cheboygan Opera House Receives $40,000 Stages Survival Grant
The Cheboygan Opera House received the maximum possible amount, $40,000, to help the Opera House stay afloat and to reopen. Large entertainment venues were among the hardest hit businesses, losing not only future ticket sales but also refunding canceled shows.
The State of Michigan allocated $3.5 million to create the Michigan Stages Survival Grant Program to provide grants to entertainment venues affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and emergency declarations.
One-time grants up to $40,000 were made available to eligible entertainment and live music venues throughout Michigan suffering significant financial hardship.
“This really saves our bacon,” says Kathy King Johnson, Executive Director of the Cheboygan Opera House. “We have been dark since March. Our skeleton crew has been doing as much as we can online: live streaming concerts, fundraising, administrating scholarships, broadcasting an online Christmas Show, and hosting the annual student art show. We have been working hard to keep our staff paid so that we can reopen when it’s possible. We are so grateful to the state agencies that made this happen, the State of Michigan, The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and the Michigan Independent Venue and Promoter Agency. With their help, we feel confident that we can provide a safe environment for our patrons to return to.”
The grant will be used to put personal protection equipment and protocols in place, to improve the ventilation and filtration system, and to bring the dance program back safely.

2021 CAAC Art Scholarships Application Deadline Extended to Friday, April 30th
The Wendy Caulkins, Irene Rose Hubbel, and Robert L. Maloney scholarships are being offered again this year.
The Irene Rose Hubbel scholarship is for graduating seniors accepted into an arts program, an accredited college, trade school, or any other program in the arts. Irene attended CAHS and devoted her life to volunteering, her family, and the arts; first awarded in 2020, this scholarship joins two other CAAC scholarships that run in perpetuity.
The Wendy Caulkins Fine Arts scholarship was endowed in 2013 and is available to a high school senior planning advanced studies in an arts-related field, including: Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Applied Arts, Graphic Art and Design, Digital Arts, or Creative Writing. Caulkins served on the CAAC board and was instrumental in saving the Opera House in the 1980s.
The Robert L. Maloney scholarship was established in 1988, providing funds for young people grades 8-11 to attend summer camp programs specializing in music and the arts. If the scholarship cannot be used in 2021 due to covid-19 cancellations, it may be used in 2022.
The applications are now online at www.theoperahouse.org/resources. Please email a completed application and required documents to Lisa Dorrance, art director, at lisa@theoperahouse.org. The deadline to submit the scholarship application is Friday, April 30th 2021.

CAAC’s 2021 Virtual Youth Art Show Opens May 1st
The Cheboygan Area Arts Council is excited to announce its second annual Virtual Youth Art Show. The 2021 show will be hosted on the Cheboygan Opera House website and promoted online, in print, and on posters around town.
The CAAC brings work from over 100+ youth art students each year. Homeschoolers and students from Bishop Baraga, Cornerstone Christian, Cheboygan Area High, Middle, and Elementary schools are displaying their best work.
“I would like to keep doing this every year,” says CAAC executive director Kathy Johnson. “The online edition is like Grandma's refrigerator. We will leave the pictures up forever so students, their friends and relatives can continue to go back to see their work. It is so beautiful. I love seeing their artwork up. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me think. And it is fun to just click through the pictures and enjoy the imagination of so many talented young people."
Cheboygan area art teachers, led by Amy Ives and Sean McNeil, contribute their students' artwork. There is no cost and entries are juried for age appropriateness.
You can check out the 2021 Virtual Youth Art Show online starting May 1st. To submit artwork, fill out this form. The art show will not be judged this year. Questions? Email Lisa at lisa@theoperahouse.org.

We need your help to support the amazing programs at the Cheboygan Opera House. Please become a member, at any level from $15 up. Your dollars provide many free programs like children's Access to Arts (shown above with Josh Davis), and our many children's choirs, bands, art shows and plays. The upkeep of the Opera House is very expensive. Even "free" shows require us to pay staff, building maintenance, marketing, and utilities. Our goal is to reach 400 members in 2019. Please join us and be a part of the arts in Northern Michigan!
