Meet CHGM's Street Outreach Team!
Street Outreach: Making An Impact & Changing Lives

Tuesday April 20, 2016 was a fantastic day for Capitol Hill Group Ministry's Street Outreach team! In addition to our regular outreach and case management work, twice monthly, our Street Outreach staff attend Coordinated Entry meetings. At these meetings, agencies around the District of Columbia come together to learn the latest in the efforts to end chronic homelessness in the District, focusing on case conferencing as well as matching individuals to housing program opportunities based upon their particular vulnerabilities and needs.

At the April 20th Coordinated Entry meeting, CHGM's Outreach team was able to match three of our homeless neighbors with available permanent supportive housing units, and another client was matched with housing through a veteran's program through another District agency. That makes four fewer individuals who will be experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC this year! Moreover, numerous studies tells us that housing improves a wide range of social, economic, and health outcomes for formerly homeless individuals, so we expect these individuals' lives to be truly transformed by their access to safe, permanent housing.

We are thrilled to be able to share this wonderful news with you. Thank you for your support of CHGM, which makes this kind of success possible!
Homelessness Prevention Program in the News

CHGM is proud to be one of the four organizations selected to lead the city's new Homelessness Prevention Program for families. Since launching the program in September 2015, CHGM has served 316 families at imminent risk of homelessness, stabilizing 90% of them in the community and enabling them to avoid entry into shelter.

CHGM Tax Clinic, 43 Years & Counting

"In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." Perhaps an addition to this old saying is in order. Our tax clinic has now been going strong for 43 years, so it may be said that our neighbors can certainly depend on the CHGM Free Tax Clinic to help them out when tax season arrives. We are beyond grateful to our extremely dedicated, knowledgeable, fun and caring volunteers who spent every Thursday evening in March and April preparing federal and DC tax returns for 35 members of our community and filing over 60 tax returns!

Week after week, CHGM's Free Tax Clinic volunteers proved that they have not only a strong knowledge of our tax code, but also a strong desire to help those they serve. In fact, they work with some clients year-round fighting for them to obtain maximum benefits on their return. Did you know that there is a "Senior Citizen" property tax break that will cut property tax in half? Our volunteers know this and they work hard to make sure that everyone entitled to this and various other tax credits, know about and receive them!

Our committed team of volunteers includes: Christine Hoffman, Martha Huizenga, Mike Ambrose and Rick Halberstein. In addition to our gratitude to each of these volunteers, a few extra special thank yous are in order. CHGM is especially grateful to the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church for being a warm and hospitable host to the tax clinic this year, and to Kristen Miller for completing all of the "e-filing" and required follow-up. Last but not least, CHGM sends a big thank you to Rick Halberstein for coordinating the entire clinic. Rick not only prepares tax returns at every single session, but he also schedules all of the clients and is the driving force behind the entire operation. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your dedication and commitment to serving the people of our community!
