10am I Way of Love - LEARN: Reflect on Scripture each day, especially on Jesus’ life & teachings

“Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” – John 14:23
Grant us so to hear [the Holy Scriptures], read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them. – Book of Common Prayer, 236

By reading and reflecting on Scripture, especially the life and teachings of Jesus, we draw near to God and God’s word dwells in us. When we open our minds and hearts to Scripture, we learn to see God’s story and God’s activity in everyday life.

For Reflection and Discernment

  • What ways of reflecting on Scripture are most life-giving for you?
  • When will (or do) you set aside time to read and reflect on Scripture in your day?
  • With whom will you share in the commitment to read and reflect on Scripture?
Come Be A Part Of Our Shove Tuesday Festivities!
Come join us for a tasty, fluffy, syrupy feast in the Undercroft on Tuesday, February 25th, at 6 PM to mark the beginning of Lent! Marlene and Jeff Going will be with their band of volunteers, flipping and dishing a delicious breakfast for dinner.

Afterwards, join our volunteers in the sanctuary to welcome back The Occasional Jazz Ensemble for fun and entertaining music!
The Occasional Jazz Ensemble!

Let's welcome back The Occasional Jazz Ensemble on Tuesday, February 25th, at 7 PM in the Sanctuary!

Enjoy the jazz stylings performed by a mix of veteran musicians, drawn from Madison to Norwich and including some of St. John's own, who has entertained at charitable functions and events from Boston to New York, with a reputation for swinging music and lively repartee. They'll be performing a mix of Chicago-style Dixieland, Great American Songbook, and old-time Gospel chestnuts to help digest pancakes.

The concert is always free! However, we do ask that you consider making a donation that will benefit the Essex Oil Community Fund, as all proceeds of the night will be given to help those in our neighborhoods!
“Ashes to Go” & Ash Wednesday Liturgies
As some of you will have seen in the Valley Courier last week, or on zip06.com, St. John’s clergy and several parishioners will be on hand to provide “Ashes to Go” at both the Old Saybrook train station as well as the Cross Lots here in Essex. Ashes to Go was begun as a way to bring church from inside the building out to where people are, recognizing that for many people, work and family obligations sometimes prevent them from attending Ash Wednesday liturgies. Ashes will be distributed Wednesday morning at the train station from 6:30 until 8:00, and at the Cross Lots park from 7:00 until 8:30.

The liturgy for Ash Wednesday, with imposition of ashes and Holy Communion, will be offered at St. John’s at 9:00 AM (spoken service) and 7:00 PM (with hymns and choir). Please do not neglect this important observance, which is always a profound way to mark one’s Lenten journey toward the Cross on Good Friday, and the empty tomb on Easter morning.

Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteers Are Needed For A Sacred Place: York Women’s Prison Ministry

Houses of Healing

A Sacred Place is a nonprofit organization working to foster hope among incarcerated women at York Correctional in Niantic. We are currently searching for volunteers who have time to share and would be interested in making a commitment to facilitating the curriculum for a program called Houses of Healing. To learn more about us and the programs we offer, including Houses of Healing, please visit http://www.ascaredplace.org, or email the Executive Director, Barbara Juliano at [email protected]. Or, for volunteer information email fellow parishioner, Rhode van Gessel at [email protected].
Leadership Opportunity: Flower Ministry

We are looking for someone who enjoys flowers and would like to coordinate the delivery of the St. John’s altar flowers and holiday plants to parishioners who are sick, shut-in, bereaved or celebrating a special occasion. This ministry is a low maintenance group, but it offers a significant opportunity to connect with others.

Marlene Going, who has been coordinating the holiday flower delivery for a long time and delivering altar flowers for the past few years, would like to step down from this ministry and give someone else the opportunity to take it on. If the flower ministry might appeal to you, please call Chelsea at the office, 860-767-8095 or [email protected].

If would like to talk to Marlene about this ministry, you may phone or text her at 860-581-0533 or email her at [email protected] .

Have Questions For The Parish Discernment Transition Team? ?
The purpose of discernment during the transition process is to paint a picture of who we are as a parish, and how we envision participating in God’s mission in the future. Which new ministries do we want to engage in; which do we want to keep or cast off? The discernment committee will do this by listening to & questioning the congregation & other stakeholders in our community. It’s important to hear from as many of you as possible. We will be conducting special discussion sessions to gather your opinions, but if you have a thought, comment or question regarding St. John’s discernment, the committee members want to hear from you. Please reach out to us through the group's email: [email protected]
