Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday
|
|
It has been a busy week of fellowship and marking the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday.
We feasted in the undercroft with neighbors and our church family for a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. Darrell Jones found the baby Jesus in the King Cake! (see picture). Thank you to all the fantastic volunteers for putting together an excellent supper. Afterward, we worked off the pancakes with a lively jazz concert that helped raise funds for families in need during the winter - Essex Oil Community Fund! Thanks to the phenomenal musicians for an evening to remember.
On Ash Wednesday, Rev. Linda and Fr. Benjamin went to Cross Lots and the Old Saybrook Train station early in the morning with some of the Joining Jesus ministry to provide Ashes to Go and hot cross buns! They came back later that morning for a Holy Eucharist service and impositions of ashes at 9 AM and again for a 7 PM service.

Come and hear from this diverse panel. Ask whatever you might like to know about Judaism or Christianity or Islam. The panel will be moderated by Past Executive Director Terry Schmitt.
Wednesday, March 11 - Rabbi Marci Bellows, Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, Chester
Rabbi Bellows shares with us her perspective on the rise of Anti-Semitism in our world and in our local area. Come and be enlightened about the sorrow and fear that comes out of anti-Semitic actions and words.
Wednesday, March 18 - The Rev. Tracy Johnson-Russell, Rector of St. Monica's Episcopal Church, Hartford
Tracy is one of the founders of the Greater Hartford Interfaith Action Alliance (GHIAA) and a leader in the Faith Based Initiative (FBI) of Hartford. She has started a program for children in Hartford's North End called My Place Hartford. Come and hear her experience of loving neighbor where she's planted.
Wednesday, March 25 - Valarie Stanley, Senior Warden at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, New Haven
Valarie is a longtime faithful member of St. Luke's and is part of the core leadership team of ECCT's Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation Network. Come and learn about the St. Luke's story as one of the oldest African American Episcopal Churches in the U.S.
Wedneday, April 1 - St. John's members involved in ECCT's Racial Healing, Justice and Reconciliation Network
Come and be part of exploring the question, So What? After hearing more about loving your neighbor, so what do we do individually or collectively as a community to love our neighbors, no matter who our neighbor is?

Leadership Opportunity: Flower Ministry
We are looking for someone who enjoys flowers and would like to coordinate the delivery of the St. John’s altar flowers and holiday plants to parishioners who are sick, shut-in, bereaved or celebrating a special occasion. This ministry is a low maintenance group, but it offers a significant opportunity to connect with others.
Marlene Going, who has been coordinating the holiday flower delivery for a long time and delivering altar flowers for the past few years, would like to step down from this ministry and give someone else the opportunity to take it on. If the flower ministry might appeal to you, please call Chelsea at the office, 860-767-8095 or
[email protected].
If would like to talk to Marlene about this ministry, you may phone or text her at 860-581-0533 or email her at
