The Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple
Sunday, February 2
This Sunday, one of the major feasts of the Church Year falls on a Sunday — February 2nd, the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple. This was commonly known as Candlemas (just like Christmas), and for our ancestors of several centuries ago would have been a major celebration, and one of the highlights of the year. Falling 40 days after Christmas, the feast recounts the ritual presentation of Jesus in the temple in Luke’s Gospel, when the aged Simeon praises Jesus as a “Light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” It was a kind of final bookend on the Christmas seasons, and marked another celebration of growing light in the waning darkness of winter. It became known as Candlemas because the faithful would bring candles for the year (precious commodities back then!) to be blessed at church. We won’t be blessing candles or holding a Candlemas procession, but if you notice extra candles around the altar on Sunday, that’s why!  Read more about the history of this Feast.

Valentine's Making Extravaganza
Come one, come all for the fourth annual inter-generational valentine making extravaganza this Sunday, February 2nd in the Parish Hall immediately following the 9 a.m. service! In addition to creating one of a kind works of art to be shared with the members of our parish who could use a lift, we will also be tackling some scripture.
In small groups we will be sharing some Bible quotes, and discussing some deeper meanings of these passages. Doesn’t that sound amazing? All are welcome and wanted, and as always feel free to bring a friend (or two or ten). We need lots of voices in the conversations and LOTS of Valentines to send and share. If there is someone you know of who could use an amazing  handmade Valentine, please bring their address and we will send them one. All you need to bring is your creativity. Any questions? Just ask Becky Honan.

What is the Way of Love?
Sunday, February 9
We begin on February 9 in our Sunday Forum with and introduction to The Way of Love: Practices for Jesus-Centered Life. The Way of Love is a way of life. More than a program or curriculum, it is a return to the ancient pathways and Rules of Life that followers of Jesus have observed for centuries. They knew the power of commitment to a core set of practices – Turn, Learn, Pray, Worship, Bless, Go, Rest – and the power of gathering in a group where you find love and support for living into these commitments. If we hope to not only worship Jesus but to grow more like him and bear his redeeming love in the world, we can adopt a rule of life like the Way of Love and find a community with which to practice it.
The Way of Love - TURN: Pause, listen and choose to follow Jesus
Sunday, February 16
As Jesus was walking along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him. – Mark 2:14
“Do you turn to Jesus Christ ...?” – Book of Common Prayer, 302

Like the disciples, we are called by Jesus to follow the Way of Love . With God’s help, we can turn from the powers of sin, hatred, fear, injustice, and oppression toward the way of truth, love, hope, justice, and freedom. In turning, we reorient our lives to Jesus Christ, falling in love again, again, and again.

For Reflection and Discernment

  • What practices help you to turn again and again to Jesus Christ and the Way of Love
  • How will (or do) you incorporate these practices into your rhythm of life?
  • Who will be your companion as you turn toward Jesus Christ?
LEARN: Reflect on Scripture each day, especially on Jesus’ life & teachings
Sunday, February 23
“Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” – John 14:23
Grant us so to hear [the Holy Scriptures], read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them. – Book of Common Prayer, 236

By reading and reflecting on Scripture, especially the life and teachings of Jesus, we draw near to God and God’s word dwells in us. When we open our minds and hearts to Scripture, we learn to see God’s story and God’s activity in everyday life.

For Reflection and Discernment

  • What ways of reflecting on Scripture are most life-giving for you?
  • When will (or do) you set aside time to read and reflect on Scripture in your day?
  • With whom will you share in the commitment to read and reflect on Scripture?
Come Be A Part Of the Festivities This February!
We know the Super Bowl is this weekend, but St. John's Super Bowl is just getting started. The Chili Cook-Off is only two weeks away! And if you consider yourself a masterful chef in all things chili, or a novice looking to spread his or her wings, we want you in this competition!

If you enjoy cooking up a hot bowl of chili on your stove top or in your trusty crockpot on a cold winter's day, then this is for you! If the heavy aroma of spices, melted cheese, peppers, and spicy baked beans just touch down to your soul, the parish wants you to throw your name into the chef's hat!

On Sunday, February 9th at 5:00 PM the competition will be in full swing down in the undercroft. We currently have two contestants competing for the People's Choice awards and we would love to have five or six more! We also have a guest judge, Jennifer Kendall, Olive Oyls owner! To throw your name in the running, please contact Chelsea DiDonato at  [email protected]  or 860-767-8095 ext. 10.

If cooking chili isn't your forte, don't put us in the trash quite yet -- because the parish still wants you too! We would love to have some side dishes and desserts and to enjoy your company for this friendly competition among friends!

We hope you'll join us in the fun!

All are welcome - and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.
You are welcome to bring your own favorite non-alcoholic beverage if you wish, but please leave all other kinds of beverages at home. Thank you! :)
And everyone knows...
Nothing follows chili better than...

Adult Inquirers' Class
Bishop Ian Douglas will confirm four on St. John's young people on Sunday, February 23, at. 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne's, Old Lyme. Are you an adult who came to St. John's from another tradition? Have you wanted to know more about the Episcopal Church. Do you wonder what it means to officially join the Episcopal Church? To officially join the Episcopal Church, one is received or confirmed by a Bishop. Some adults choose to reaffirm their baptismal vows. Adults at St. John's are invited to join an Inquirers' Class with the Rev. Linda Spiers. We'll use Scott Gun's and Melody Wilson Shobe's book entitled Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs & Practices. We will meet at a time that works best for the group. Please call Linda in the office or speak to her Sunday. Books are currently available, and we will begin meeting the first week of February.
Discernment Team Announcement
Parish Discernment
The purpose of discernment during the transition process is to paint a picture of who we are as a parish, and how we envision participating in God’s mission in the future. Which new ministries do we want to engage in; which do we want to keep or cast off? The discernment committee will do this by listening to & questioning the congregation & other stakeholders in our community. It’s important to hear from as many of you as possible. We will be conducting special discussion sessions to gather your opinions, but if you have a thought, comment or question regarding St. John’s discernment, the committee members want to hear from you. Please reach out to us through the group's email: [email protected]
Discernment Team: Nat Eddy, Jim Myslik, Ken Ewell, Paulette Rider, Skip Fiorelli, Lee Gaby,
Sara van der Horst, Marlene Going, Gretchen Soares, Carey White, Pauline Kezer.
