10th Anniversary of Haiti Earthquake

As we arrive at the somber anniversary of the devastating 2009 earthquake in Haiti, join us as parishioner Jenifer Grant talks about our ongoing work and connections with our ministry partners in Haiti, particularly through Sister Cities Essex Haiti, as well as the work of Hospital Albert Schweitzer, founded by her parents.
St. John's Episcopal Church: Hearts and Hope for Haiti
Join us at 4 PM in the sanctuary for a community service on Sunday, January 12th, at 4 PM to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the January 12th, 2010, earthquake. This service will celebrate the generous heartedness and hopefulness of all in Haiti and here in the US who have supported Sister Cities Essex Haiti since our founding in 2010. All are welcome to join us in this remembrance of having hearts and hope for Haiti through prayers, readings and song. Places of worship are invited to ring their bells at 4:53 PM in observance of the quake's occurrence.
About Sister Cities Essex Haiti

Sister Cities Essex Haiti was created in June 2010 by a group of dedicated residents in the Town of Essex with the support of the Selectmen. It serves as a portal through which people who are interested in making a positive, measurable impact on a community in Haiti can do so while developing relationships with the people in that community.
Thursday, January 2, 2020: Kate Konrad Vigil
Last Thursday, we collaborated with Kate's school, Valley Regional High School, and Trinity Lutheran (Centerbrook) for a vigil in Kate Konrad's name. St. John's, Valley Regional High School, Trinity Lutheran, friends, loved ones, and neighbors attended our packed church over 400 people. A most gracious thank you for everyone who came out to support the Konrad's. We currently have no news to share, but the power of prayer travels, and so does the word of the Connecticut news. Please continue to share the links below with your loved ones.

January Forums
MLK Weekend: January 19
As part of the civic commemorations of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20th, we will use our forum time to remember and discuss his life and work. This is also a way of continuing to honor and engage the ongoing season of Racial Healing, Justice, and Reconciliation that we and others in the Episcopal Church in Connecticut have pledged to live into.
Annual Financial Meeting
All members of St. John’s are urged to attend this necessary and very important meeting in which the budget is reviewed and accepted.

Discernment Team Announcement
Parish Discernment
The purpose of discernment during the transition process is to paint a picture of who we are as a parish, and how we envision participating in God’s mission in the future. Which new ministries do we want to engage in; which do we want to keep or cast off? The discernment committee will do this by listening to & questioning the congregation & other stakeholders in our community. It’s important to hear from as many of you as possible. We will be conducting special discussion sessions to gather your opinions, but if you have a thought, comment or question regarding St. John’s discernment, the committee members want to hear from you. Please reach out to one of us.

Pastoral Care Cards
Thanks so much, one and all!

Members of our congregation have stepped up as usual when asked. The 2020 card writing team includes the following folks: Nancy King, Becky Honan and the church school, Kathy Randall, Paulette Rider, Betsy Godsman, Deb Swaney-Jones, Gerri Smith, Dawn Boulanger, Peg Chester, Marlene Going, Clio Coles, and Julie Glaski. Thanks are also due to Linda Santangelo and Jane D’Auria, who are retiring from their 2019 slots.

Each person has chosen a month and will send cards to those who are sick, homebound, or grieving. We are very blessed to have so many who volunteer for this wonderful way to keep in contact with some of our special parishioners. If you know of anyone who might benefit from this pastoral “touch,” please inform the church office any time during the year.
