Message from the CEO

This week marks three months on the job as CEO of the YW-NYC. I'm so excited to be part of the YW and appreciate the dedication of our staff, supporters and community partners. Thank you to the YW family for inspiring me every day to continue in the fight to break racial and gender barriers. Our united commitment to equity, inclusion, and to the young women and children of NYC is stronger than ever.

We've had an amazing fall at the YW; celebrating student milestones, being i nspired by workshops, and welcoming students back to school. I'm excited to share with you some of what our staff, kids and young women are up to this season.

Girls Initiatives
Leadership Programs
Step in and Stop it! Bystander Intervention Training equips participants with the tools they need to stand up and speak out in the face of injustice.

Nurnahar is just beginning her training and will soon be ready to conduct her own bystander intervention workshop.
STEAAM Programs
Geek Girls teaches participants how to apply scientific techniques toward solving social issues while preparing them for opportunities in STEM.

Maia is working on creating her own circuit during this fall's Let Off Some STEAM project in partnership with STEM Kids NYC!
Alternative Presence workshop explores Octavia Butler’s Parable series through literary activist immersion theater. Guided by excerpts, participants creatively interpret survival skills and are working toward an exhibition of their ideal community infrastructure.

Emele is learning about building shelter, creating communication systems, resource mapping and wild edible plant harvesting!
Welcome Back Event
Kids, parents and staff united at P.S.188 in celebration of Back to School. Everyone enjoyed the creation stations that inspired team building, exploration, interactive and critical thinking skills, and fun!

Fan favorites: STEM, board game and slime stations!
Superhero Day
On October 25th the YW-NYC at P.S.329 hosted “Superhero day”. It was an opportunity for each child to dress up as their favorite superhero and celebrate their unique superpowers.

The kids danced and pizza partied their way to pick-up time. We’ll see all of our heroes again next year!
Arts & Crafts
The kids at P.S.327 enjoyed a little art fun just in time for Halloween! Arts & Crafts time gives our kids the space to explore through hands-on experiential projects and own their creative choices.

What better way to share Halloween excitement than crafting a Jack-o-lantern!
Spotlight on Week Without Violence 2019
The YW-NYC family and supporters gathered for a week of events on October 15-19, 2019 in recognition of YWCA USA’s efforts to end gender-based violence. In New York City, YW-NYC hosted four workshops and events including discussion panels on effective strategies for prevention and intervention , a trauma-informed yoga session, and used art to explore racial and gender violence. The art pieces created at our Meet & Bead and Paint & Sip events are being donated to residents of a local shelter during the holidays. Join us for a Week Without Violence on October 2020!
