Letter from the Library Director

DRG Oct 2021 Retouched.jpg

Debra Rhodes Gibson, Library Director

St. Johns County Public Library

Your St. Johns County libraries are more than just books. People of all ages use the library to enrich their lives. You and your family come to the library for programs, stop by just to enjoy meeting friends and neighbors, and increasingly take advantage of rapidly expanding services available on computers, smart phones, and other mobile devices. The challenge to serve all age groups could easily strain our budget, but your librarians are listening to your needs and working each day to anticipate the next “big” thing, whether that is a new technology, a new program, or an additional library branch.

We have increased the eBooks budget based upon their significant popularity. We maintain free Wi-Fi connections to make the use of iPads, laptops, and other portable devices easy and convenient, even from outside our facilities. We have expanded our virtual and in-house programs based upon demand.

From the Collection: Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates the contributions of generations of Asian/Pacific Americans to American history, society, and culture. The month of May was chosen to pay tribute to the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

In addition, May was proclaimed as Jewish American Heritage Month by President George W. Bush in 2006. Jewish American Heritage Month celebrates Jewish Americans' contributions to America since they first arrived in New Amsterdam in 1654.

Libraries Closed for Staff Development Day and Memorial Day

In order to provide the best possible service to our patrons, all SJCPLS libraries and bookmobiles will be closed on Wednesday, May 4, for Staff Development Day. This will be the first time since 2019 that the Library has met for a staff training day. The goal of each Library Staff Development Day is to raise the bar on the abilities of library staff in order to maintain and improve library services for all of St. Johns County.

Additionally, in observance of the Memorial Day holiday, all SJCPLS libraries will be closed on Monday, May 30. Book drops will remain open, and our virtual services such as eBooks, downloadables, and databases are available 24/7.
