Lake Waccamaw Initiates Building Inspection Services
We are excited to announce that effective December 1, 2020, the Town of Lake Waccamaw will begin issuing building permits and providing inspection services. Building Inspector, Scott Turbeville will be at Town Hall available to answer questions from residents and contractors each work day from 8:00 am - 9:00 am. Inspections and other field work will begin after 9:00 am.

Before you start a home renovation project, whether it’s a new kitchen, an updated family room or a new sunroom, please check to see if you need a building permit. Generally, a building permit is required for ANY construction, installation, repair, replacement or alteration costing more than $15,000. A permit is also required, no matter what the cost, if the work involves the addition, repair or replacement of load bearing members or structures, the addition of plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical wiring, devices, appliances or equipment.

Remember... obtaining the proper permits and inspections are required by law and protect the residents by insuring that the work done is safe and meets the minimum standards of the State Building Code.
Examples Of Work
Requiring A Permit

Decks, carports, garages, piers and/or docks of any size. (State Park permit is also required for piers or docks.)

• All storage buildings.

• Room additions, finishing an unfinished attic space.

• Relocating or installing new light fixtures that add to the electrical system.

• Replacing and reconnecting furnaces, etc.

• Adding to or modifying the heating and air conditioning system, including change out of unit.

• Adding an additional sink or water closet or modifying the plumbing system.

• Replacing a water heater. (Electrical, plumbing and/or mechanical permits may be required.)

• Backflow device on landscape irrigation systems.

• Kitchen cabinet replacement that changes the configuration or exceeds $15,000.

• Structural repair i.e. floor joists, Sub-floor, roof sheathing, headers, piers, footings.

• When the conditions require a permit for re-roofing projects and mechanical vents associated with gas appliances are penetrating the roof, then a mechanical permit is required as well.
Examples Of Work That Can Be Done Without A Permit

The repair of non-load bearing components and non-structural repairs.

• Replacement of windows and doors if they remain in the same location and are the same size. (Must meet current standard Code requirements.)

• Repairing pickets, railings, stair treads and decking on exterior decks, porches and balconies.

• Any plumbing equipment or fixture/fitting replacement which does not change equipment size or  system capacity.

• Vinyl siding replacement, as long as the total cost doesn’t exceed $15,000.

• Roofing replacement that does not exceed $15,000, uses the same type of materials and no structural work is performed.

• Repair/replacement of dishwashers, disposals, or light fixtures provided that the work does not include the addition or relocation of wiring (to be done by a licensed contractor only).
Zoning Permits

Zoning permits are also required for work conducted on all properties regulated by the Town of Lake Waccamaw Zoning Ordinance.
If you have questions about permitting, please contact Scott Turbeville, Code Enforcement Officer at 910-646-3700 or email lwinspector@embarqmail.com
Lake Waccamaw's favorite annual holiday tradition,
re-imagined to allow for a safe experience!

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the tree lighting ceremony will be different this year. Here are the details:

  • Meet at the Christmas Tree on Flemington Drive on Friday, December 4th at 6:00 pm.
  • Wear a mask and socially distance from non-family members or watch from your car. (The traditional sing-along and children's reading at the manger scene will not be part of the ceremony this year.)
  • For a virtual experience, watch live as the tree lights come on via the Town's Facebook page.
