Sadly, the 2020 Lake Waccamaw Christmas Parade has been cancelled this year due to COVID-19. The Town Council will make a decision on whether to proceed with a modified Tree Lighting Ceremony at the November regular meeting.
Town Board Meetings Reopened to the Public
Now that North Carolina has moved to Phase 3 of the Reopening Plan, the November 10, 2020 meeting and subsequent meetings will be held at Town Hall and open to the public and no longer streamed virtually. All attendees will be seated in a socially distant manner and will be required to wear masks.
Elizabeth Brinkley Park Update
In October, the Town Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to not accept the PARTF grant awarded in 2017. The Town had originally applied for $500,000 but was only awarded $189,000. Despite a reduction in funding, the expectation of PARTF was that all of the proposed improvements be constructed.
While this grant was not accepted, the Town is committed to completing the park expansion in a cost-effective and incremental manner with plans to reapply for a matching (50/50) grant in May 2021. The grant application will be for Phase I of the park which will include clearing, grading, construction of stormwater pond(s) and as many park elements as can affordably be accomplished.
New Well Project Underway
In mid-October, the town began construction on two new test wells planned for each end of town. The wells are being drilled near the LKW Fire Department substation on Dupree Landing Road and at the end of Bella Coola Road at the LKW State Park. The test wells will determine if the water quality and quantity at each site are adequate to construct permanent wells. These new wells will enhance water pressure, support fire suppression and improve water quality.
