There’s an Election Coming Up!

The FMEC encourages all of its members and the other students, residents and faculty we work with to register to vote and to use their authority as healthcare providers to examine and promote health policy issues they care about. The FMEC is a nonpartisan organization and does not take positions on candidates or issues, but we encourage our constituency to vote and be active in shaping health care policy. Here are some resources.

Vot-ER: Vot-ER is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to integrate civic engagement into healthcare. Visit Vot-ER to get conversation starters to start nonpartisan discussions about voting, and to order a free voter registration badge which your patients can scan, leading them to resources on voter registration, mail-in ballots, and more.

Ask Nurses and Doctors, or AND: Through AND, you can access training material on policy issues, tips and consultation on writing letters to the editor and op-eds, and more. AND has a special emphasis on engaging with healthcare providers in swing states and swing districts. If you would like to get involved, please contact AND!

AAFP Advocacy: Find out what the AAFP is doing to protect and promote the specialty of family medicine.

Vote.gov: Make sure you are registered to vote! And help your patients, family, and community members access vote.gov to become registered too.

New FMEC Projects - Join Us

New Project will Address Medical-Dental Collaboration

With the support of the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, the FMEC is launching a new education and quality improvement (QI) project to affect change in how primary care approaches the oral health of patients, with a focus on access to appropriate and comprehensive care for veterans. The medical-dental integration curriculum Smiles for Life has low penetration in the FMEC region, with only about 15% of the approximately 3,800 residents participating in 2023. Veterans have high rates of periodontitis, tooth decay, bone loss, and use of sweetened beverages and nicotine, and often need access to more comprehensive care including dental care but also mental and behavioral healthcare, trauma services, and substance use counseling and assessment. If you are an oral health advocate and would like to participate, either on the project’s leadership group or in the QI project to improve your residency program, please contact Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net.

Learning Network on Personal Health Inventory in Development

The FMEC Integrative Health Learning and Teaching Network is developing a learning collaborative on using the HOPE Note (Healing Oriented Practices and Environments) and integrating Personal Health Inventory (PHI) questionnaires into clinic visits. CME and Performance Improvement credits will be offered. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rebecca Bouck at rebecca.bouck@fmec.net

What’s the difference between seminars, workshops, lecture discussions, and all the other program formats, and how can you plan your schedule now? Which programs will be represented at the Residency Fair, and how can you make the most of your time there? What questions should you be asking? And more. Call for Applications for FMEC Member-At-Large Position

The FMEC Board of Trustees is seeking applicants for a Member-at-Large position on the Board! We will have one vacancy for a three-year term, starting in October 2024. Due to FMEC bylaws, the member-at-large should be someone who will serve on the Host Committee for the 2025 Annual Meeting, to be held in Cleveland, OH, so candidates from Ohio or with Ohio connections are prioritized. Read this Call for FMEC Board Applications for a description of Board duties and how to submit your statement, CV, and short video.

FMEC Healthcare Innovators Network Highlight

The FMEC Healthcare Innovators Network, which began in 2008, was sharing information on “direct primary care” before it even had a name and helped lead to the creation of the Direct Primary Care Summit. In Ashtabula, Ohio, Bryce Heinbaugh, MBA combined a direct primary care practice with a patient navigator and a community owned pharmacist. Mr. Heinbaugh approached local employers with a plan that would improve care for their employees while reducing the overall cost of care. The savings are being re-invested in employees and in the community. Over the years, Mr. Heinbaugh has provided updates on this innovative “community owned health plan” at the Healthcare Innovators Network meetings, and he will do so again at this year’s event on September 19. Learn more about Mr. Heinbaugh’s approach in this 2022 interview, What is a Community Owned Health Plan, with FMEC CEO Emeritus Larry Bauer, and join us at the FMEC Healthcare Innovators Network on September 19.
