Letter from the President

“It is great to see you again!”

I am a Family Medicine Residency Director in Lancaster, PA and this time of year is busy with interviewing medical students for the July 2025 intern class. I cannot tell you how many times over the last two months I have said the sentence above to medical students that I first met at FMEC Annual Meetings over the last few years. FMEC helps make my job as a program director so much easier. It helps me recruit students to my residency. Through collaborative projects like the IMPLICIT Network, it helps our residents and faculty do scholarly activities including performance improvement projects, presentations and research. The offerings at the Annual Meeting help me learn different approaches to clinical and academic problems, and they inspire me. The FMEC provides leadership opportunities for our residents, faculty and program leaders.

For many, December is a time to reflect on the events of the past year and make resolutions for the upcoming year. I am grateful for all that FMEC has done for me this year. As President of the Board of Trustees, I resolve to lead and support FMEC in its mission “to improve the health of the nation by strengthening family medicine and primary care to meet its full potential.”

Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Join an FMEC committee to plan the 2025 Annual Meeting

Meet colleagues, add to your CV, and help make 2025 the best meeting ever by serving on the Planning Committee, Host Committee, or Award Review Teams.

Nearly 50 individuals serve on the Planning Committee to help review and score program submissions for the Annual Meeting. Each reviewer receives a subset of submissions, and they also may help mentor speakers when the proposals need work. We always need more reviewers! Please consider joining and/or asking your faculty or residents to join. Contact Lisa Schwieterman at lisa.schwieterman@fmec.net for more information.

Residency programs in Ohio and western Pennsylvania should join the Host Committee. The Host Committee chooses the meeting theme, suggests plenary speakers, raises money to support the meeting, and helps the FMEC engage the local community Please contact Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net.

Award Review Teams review submissions for the FMEC’s seven awards and choose winners. Read more about the FMEC awards, and contact Jennifer Stamper at jennifer.stamper@fmec.net if you are interested in serving on a review panel.

Help Introduce Students

to Family Medicine

At the 2024 Annual Meeting, incoming President Dr. Pam Vnenchak announced that the FMEC’s student scholarship program – which has brought nearly 8,000 medical students to FMEC meetings over the last 20 years – would be named the Nik Zervanos Student Scholarship Program, in honor of FMEC founder, Dr. Nikitas Zervanos. Dr. Zervanos, founder and long-time director of the Family Practice Residency Program at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, has been instrumental in introducing students to family medicine. In 1992, Dr. Zervanos singlehandedly found a funding source to pay for the expense of bringing dozens of students to the FMEC Annual Meeting. That meeting, known as “The Happening in Lancaster,” started FMEC on the path it follows today. Thousands of medical students have chosen the specialty due to their exposure at the FMEC meetings.

Please help continue the great work started by Dr. Zervanos and contribute to the Nik Zervanos, MD, Student Scholarship program.
