From the President

Greetings to the family of Family Medicine!

I am so excited to connect with you during this winter season as we have brought in the New Year with excitement and celebrate Black History Month. As an organization committed to education within family medicine, it is important that we reflect on the longstanding institutional constructs that have supported health care inequities within primary care.

Through our collective standing as promoters of the growth of family medicine, we are each charged to take on the challenge of providing culturally-sensitive care to our communities, through training and developing a diverse workforce.

I also want to take this opportunity to encourage you to get your submissions in today for our annual meeting in Providence, RI. The FMEC is an organization of firsts for so many of us! Through the FMEC, in the late 2000s, I was able to present my first scholarly poster and as a junior faculty member, I was able to give my first peer reviewed oral presentation. As an early career family physician trying to establish my own career trajectory, it was such an amazing feeling to be able to find my clan of individuals who inspired me to a career in academic family medicine. Today, I continue to make sure that I actively engage in the annual meeting through submissions of my scholarly work. I encourage you as a student, resident, fellow or faculty member to take this opportunity to share your scholarly contributions to the field of family medicine.

Remember, act now before it’s too late! We will see you in Providence in the fall. Thank you so much for being a part of our community.

Sincerely,

Leon McCrea II, MD, MPH

The Five Myths of the “Against Medical Advice” (AMA) Hospital Discharge, Link to register

Most medical students, residents, and even attending physicians have had no formal training surrounding the often misunderstood against medical advice (AMA) hospital discharge. There are no guidelines for how to address these complex patient encounters. Background regarding the definition and what the literature notes about the characteristics of AMA discharges will be reviewed. The five most common myths surrounding the AMA hospital discharges will be discussed. A system of AMA universal precautions will be promoted to systematically address these challenging scenarios. This session will promote a formal system for educating family medicine residents on this topic.

DPC Summit On Demand

Whether you're starting to do research, or you already run an established direct primary care (DPC) practice, you'll find the expertise you need in the all-new DPC Summit On Demand, which is now available for just $350. Earn up to 23.25 CME credits and learn about Parting Ways: How to Leave the System; DPC Start-up Tips; The DPC Patient Experience; and more.

Would your residency program like a presentation on DPC? The FMEC knows that many residents are interested in this model, but few can spend the time and money to attend the DPC Summit. If you would like the FMEC to help arrange a presentation for your residents on DPC, virtually or in person, please contact Shayla Rammel at shayla.rammel@fmec.net

FMEC Initiative Updates

10 residency programs join new FMEC learning collaborative

FMEC’s funding is provided by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD), and the project will utilize tools from the CDC’s Bring Your Brave Campaign. Thank you to the faculty and residents from these programs who have joined us to learn more about narrative medicine and hereditary cancers.

FMEC project stresses the importance

of breast cancer education

and testing

The FMEC’s learning collaborative is highlighting the critical role that family medicine plays in catching hereditary cancers early and suggesting new tools to help with patient conversations. Members of the project advisory committee presented to the cohort at its first learning session earlier this month. “When we talk about early onset breast cancer, we’re really looking at women between the ages of 18 and 45. Many of them are only getting their care from you,” said Dr. Susanna Evans to the FMEC’s cohort of faculty and residents. “If you’re not having this conversation with them, nobody is.” According to the CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, only about 41% of primary care physicians refer a woman with high risk for breast cancer for genetic counseling and testing. Our challenge is changing this, and asking how we can develop the means to stimulate authentic conversations that lead to action.

Referencing the work of Rita Charon, PhD, MD, who popularized the term “narrative medicine” and drove the expansion of its use in medical training through multiple publications, Dr. Philip Day discussed narrative competence, which is the ability to “acknowledge, absorb, interpret and act on the stories and plights of others.” Dr. Day also discussed diagnostic listening, empathetic engagement, and reflective practice.

The narrative medicine strategy led the CDC to develop the Bring Your Brave Campaign, which was introduced to the cohort by NACDD Consultant Dr. Anya Karavanov. “When you see someone who looks like you, or looks like someone you know, who could be your peer or family member, you may be more likely to make connections between what this person is sharing and what you should know,” said Dr. Karavanov. “Women in our stories also help model the desired behavior, so they seek genetic counseling, talk to providers, talk to family members, seek treatment, so we are also increasing their self-efficacy.” The campaign shifts the healthcare provider’s focus from the need to problem solve to the need to understand, strengthening the doctor-patient relationship.

Annual Meeting Updates

The 2023 Annual Meeting will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI from October 13-15, 2023. Learn more about Providence, RI in the official GoProvidence Guide. Read the full announcement at Family Medicine Education Consortium News

Last chance to submit a presentation!

The deadline for submitting a proposal to the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting has been extended through Friday, February 17, 2023.

*Student posters will be accepted until July 1st.

For more information and inks to the submission forms, visit the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting Submission Page, and for information on the specific types of presentations, review the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting Session Overview.

Join the Annual Meeting Planning Committee

The FMEC receives over 300 submissions each year for its Annual Meeting. A group of 50+ residents, faculty and others review and rate the submissions, providing important feedback to the Planning Committee Coordinators who put together the final schedule. Want to join the Planning Committee and be a reviewer? Please do!

  • Your input helps shape the meeting – you can help us determine tracks, make suggestions to improve programs that get submitted, or help us identify “gaps” (topics that should be on the agenda but don’t get submitted organically).
  • It's an excellent way to stay connected with the FMEC and to make contacts with other family medicine leaders throughout the region.
  • It's a great academic endeavor which does not require a huge time commitment.
  • You can use submission review as an exercise for your residents and fellows.
  • You can add it to your CV.

To join the Planning Committee, contact Lisa Schwieterman: lisa.schwieterman@fmec.net.
