Call for 2024 submissions open

The FMEC invites family physicians, residents and medical students throughout the northeastern U.S. to submit presentations for its 2024 Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held September 19-21, 2024, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, a central location in downtown Philadelphia and near many exciting attractions. Beginning in 2024, the schedule for the meeting will change in order to eliminate programming on Sunday. Preconferences will occur on Thursday, and the meeting itself will be held all day Friday and Saturday, with no programming or events on Sunday.

For more information and an overview of the types of presentations accepted, visit the FMEC 2024 Annual Meeting website. All proposals are due by February 9, 2024, with the exception of poster submissions from medical students.

Join an FMEC committee to plan the 2024 Annual Meeting

Meet colleagues, add to your CV, and help make 2024 the best meeting ever by serving on the Planning Committee, Host Committee, or Award Review Teams.

Virtually this spring, nearly 50 individuals serve on the Planning Committee to help review and score program submissions for the Annual Meeting. Each reviewer receives a subset of submissions, and they also may help mentor speakers when the proposals need work. They also serve as moderators and poster judges onsite during the meeting (optional). With the volume of proposals we receive (nearly 300!), we always need more reviewers! Please consider joining and/or asking your faculty or residents to join. Contact Lisa Schwieterman at [email protected] for more information or simply sign-up using this Planning Committee registration form.

If you are local to the Philadelphia area and would like to serve on the Host Committee, please contact Scott Allen at [email protected]. The Host Committee chooses the meeting theme, suggests plenary speakers, raises money to support the meeting, and helps the FMEC engage the local community.

We are also looking for individuals to serve on the Award Review Teams for the FMEC’s awards program. The FMEC offers seven awards annually, with some recognizing achievement in family medicine and academics, and some recognizing prose, poetry and visual arts. Later this spring, juries of FMEC members will review submissions and choose winners. Read more about the FMEC awards, and contact Jennifer Stamper at [email protected] if you are interested in serving on a review panel.

FMEC helps advocate for family medicine

The FMEC strives to increase the number of family physicians nationwide and believes any reduction in the capacity to train family physicians is a step backwards. When family medicine residency programs are at risk of closing, the FMEC encourages members to advocate to keep them open. We are happy to announce that after an outpouring of support from the community, the Mount Sinai Family Medicine program, operated through a contract with the Institute for Family Health, will remain open. A new 5-year contract has been agreed to in concept and is being drafted. Read more on X at @SinaiFamilyMed. In Cleveland, University Hospitals announced that the Family Medicine Residency at the Cleveland Medical Center would be closing by attrition, scheduled to stop operations in 2026. Read more in this statement from the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and this article from Signal Cleveland. The FMEC urged the program to stay open and encourages the family medicine community to do the same.

Thank you for joining us in Providence!

Over 1,000 students, residents and faculty joined the FMEC for the 2023 Annual Meeting in October in Providence, RI. Read more and see photos from the meeting in the 2023 Annual Meeting Wrap Up Report. You can access the Wrap Up Report on the FMEC homepage at www.fmec.net, along with the emails sent daily during the Annual Meeting with other updates, plenary summaries, information on poster presentation winners, and more.
