Virtual Education from the FMEC

The FMEC is excited to share a sampling of seminars from our 2022 Annual Meeting with faculty, residents and students throughout the region. The sessions are some of the many highly-rated seminars that were presented in Arlington, VA in September 2022. These are NOT recorded sessions; they are live so you can hear directly from the presenters and ask your questions. Registration is free but required to receive the Zoom participation link.

Find “topic leaders” in your program and schedule lunch-and-learns! The FMEC has already heard from a few residencies who are using these webinars as lunchtime didactic sessions, to listen in on and discuss as a group, and identifying faculty and residents to facilitate discussion. Please let the FMEC know if you plan to participate like that!

The first session is:

FMEC Initiative Updates

Learning Collaborative on Narrative Medicine and Hereditary Cancers

The FMEC is kicking off its new cross-institutional Learning Collaborative on Hereditary Cancers in Women and Narrative Medicine. “Learning collaboratives have been recognized, and strongly encouraged within the new ACGME guidelines, as a powerful tool in family medicine training and the subsequent enrichment of patient care,” said Leon McCrea II, MD, FMEC President. “We hope what we learn through this new initiative that will be shared with training programs nationally.” FMEC’s funding is provided by the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD), and the project will utilize tools from the CDC’s Bring Your Brave campaign. FMEC thanks our advisory committee, Drs. Tracey Conti (UPMC), Philip G. Day (UMass), Susanna Evans (Tower Drexel), Adam Perrin (UConn), and Sarah Inés Ramírez, MD (Penn State). FMEC also thanks the family residency programs who are participating, including but not limited to Howard University, LewisGale Medical Center, Mercy St. Elizabeth Youngstown, United Health Services/Wilson, Geisinger Health System - Lewistown and Temple University.

New Integrative Health project will launch soon

From 2020-2022, the FMEC convened 17 clinics and training programs for an integrative health learning community. In 2023, thanks to the generous support of the Samueli Foundation, the FMEC will continue this important work, initiating a new Integrative Health Learning Collaborative while also increasing access to integrative health information broadly via FMEC webinars, Annual Meeting programs, and more. We need your leadership to make this program strong! Many faculty in the FMEC region are currently teaching or developing curricula for IH training – please share your expertise with us. If you are interested in speaking or serving on a leadership group for the FMEC’s efforts, please contact Rebecca Bouck at rebecca.bouck@fmec.net.

Direct Primary Care

Would your residency program like a presentation on DPC? The FMEC knows that many residents are interested in this model, but few can spend the time and money to attend the DPC Summit. If you would like the FMEC to help arrange a presentation for your residents on DPC, virtually or in person, please contact Shayla Rammel at shayla.rammel@fmec.net

From the FMEC Board of Trustees

Welcome Dr. Uchenna Emeche

The FMEC Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Uchenna Emeche has joined the Board as a member-at-large for a 2022-2025 term. Dr. Emeche is currently Associate Medical Director at the Medstar Franklin Square Family Health Center, doing work that centers around primary care redesign, population health, process improvement, care of the medically and/or psychosocially complex patient, and women's health/obstetrics. For the complete FMEC Board of Trustees list and brief bios of our leadership, visit FMEC Board of Trustees.

FMEC Board will meet in February 2023

The FMEC Board of Trustees will hold its winter meeting February 23-25, 2023. We have a packed agenda and will be discussing pathways to become involved with the FMEC via new projects and committees; strengthening and promoting our Organizational Partner program; improving and expanding our student scholarship program to further promote family medicine to interested students; how the FMEC can continue to support residency programs to implement new ACGME guidelines; and more. What do you want to see the FMEC do in the future? To make suggestions to the FMEC, please contact FMEC President Leon McCrea at leon.mccrea@drexelmed.edu or CEO Scott Allen at scott.allen@fmec.net with your ideas.
