2023 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for the FMEC. Of course, we are focused on making the 2023 Annual Meeting (October 13-15, 2023, in Providence, RI) as successful as ever. With a record number of program submissions and already dozens of residencies registered for the Residency Fair, we are well on our way to a stellar meeting. We can’t wait to see you there!
We are also busy expanding how we support residency training and scholarly activity. The FMEC’s most exciting new venture will be a peer-reviewed journal that will launch in 2024. We will share more information on the journal this fall. We continue to expand our learning communities and collaboratives, on narrative medicine and breast cancer, whole-person health, birth outcomes, and more. We’ve recently convened the program coordinators from our region’s 200+ residency programs, to see how we can better support them in the crucial roles they play for residents and faculty.
We are also strengthening FMEC’s infrastructure and leadership to ensure a strong future. Later this year, the FMEC Board of Trustees will expand to include a resident and a medical student (watch for opportunities to apply). We hope to create some internship opportunities for residents and students at the FMEC, to give them new experiences outside their training. Lastly, our multi-year Legacy Campaign, and the dozens of donors who have given generously, has generated revenue that is not only supporting new activity but ensuring sustainability for the FMEC. Our financial position is strong, with reserves that generate interest income and can support us through slow periods if needed.
Finally, I’m personally very excited to announce the dates and location of our 2024 Annual Meeting. The meeting will be held Thursday, September 19, 2024, through Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Philadelphia Marriott. You will love the location – right downtown, across from Reading Terminal Market. And in response to your feedback, we are shifting the FMEC schedule so programming will end with the Residency Fair on Saturday night. You will get your Sunday back for family, fun or whatever you choose to do! Watch for more updates from the FMEC, and if you’d like to join the 2024 Host Committee to help plan and support the meeting, please contact me or Scott Allen.
I speak for the full Board of Trustees when I say we are enthusiastic and energized for the future. Please continue to work with and support the FMEC for the future of family medicine.
Leon McCrea II, MD, MPH, FMEC President

June Observances and Celebrations | |
Today is Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was read to the last remaining enslaved Africans. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, officially made a federal holiday in 2021. The FMEC is committed to supporting people of color and advancing DEI efforts. A lengthy discussion was held during our February 2023 meeting, after reading and discussing Reflections of a Black Program Director (NEJM, 2023; 388:e18), about how we can better support faculty and residents through education, mentorship, and more. We appreciate all that family physicians do to end racist and discriminatory practices in their institutions and communities, increase health equity, and work to increase opportunities for those from racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population. Read more about Juneteenth.
Pride Month
June is nationally recognized as Pride Month, to honor the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history and to promote equality. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are often marginalized and denied access to health care. As medical providers and community leaders, family physicians can play an important role in eliminating barriers and disparities in health care, promoting inclusion, and fighting hate and injustice. AAFP resources such as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning or Queer (LGBTQ) Health Toolkit, articles and policy statements can help. Read more about Pride Month.
Men’s Health Month
Men’s Health Month aims to encourage boys and men to take charge of their overall health by implementing healthy living decisions. Men in the U.S. live nearly six years less than women, with non-Hispanic Black and American Indian/Alaska Native men having a lower life expectancy than non-Hispanic white men. Many diseases disproportionately impacting men are preventable with proper medical care and lifestyle choices. Get more data on men’s health along with ways to get involved and educate patients on the CDC’s Men’s Health statistics page and the DHHS Office of Minority Health’s Men’s Health Month 2023 website.
