The FMEC is celebrating Match 2023 with you! As FMEC members know, we work hard to promote family medicine to medical students, and give family medicine residency programs exposure. Our 2022 Annual Meeting Residency Fair had over 300 students meeting with 89 residency programs! And last year, over 500 students registered for our 13 Hot Topics webinars, through which residency programs could introduce themselves and highlight what makes family medicine exciting and rewarding.
The FMEC could not do what we do to promote family medicine and give students and residency programs these opportunities without your support. Donate today to support student scholarships at the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting.

A productive and fun time in Providence, RI | |

The FMEC Board of Trustees met February 23-25, 2023, at the Graduate Hotel in Providence, RI.
Agenda items included expanding access to the FMEC for medical students interested in family medicine, both through scholarships to the Annual Meeting and virtual events; strengthening connections with the 200+ family medicine residency programs in our 14-state region (more than half of which are active with the FMEC already); and increasing FMEC’s mentorship and support of key groups including emerging leaders, new faculty, residency programs that are new or in development, physicians and trainees of color, medical professionals seeking publishing and editing experience, and others. The board also continued to plan new programs to help residencies meet ACGME requirements, including the development of new learning collaboratives. In addition to conducting business, they toured the Rhode Island Convention Center and can’t wait to welcome family physicians and students to Providence in October!

Plan now for an expanded preconference schedule
The FMEC Annual Meeting typically offers preconferences on Friday morning, and the full agenda kicks off at 1pm on Friday. Some preconferences at the FMEC 2023 Annual Meeting will start earlier than usual, including the afternoon of Thursday, October 12, so make your travel plans now. The schedule will be finalized soon, but the FMEC hopes to offer preconferences on the following topics and initiatives: ALSO Instructor Course; Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS); diversity and inclusion; support and networking for new (under 5 years) and emerging residency programs; meeting your ACGME learning collaborative requirement; FACTS; and the IMPLICIT Network Meeting.
Plan now to arrive Thursday morning and spend an extra night in the fun city of Providence, RI!

Record number of proposals are submitted!
The FMEC received 320 proposals for sessions by its deadline in mid-February, compared to about 270 in 2022. Most submissions come from the FMEC’s 14-state region in the northeast, and once again family physicians from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio led submissions with over 200 total. New England states submitted a combined 78 sessions, compared to 24 in 2022. We share your excitement for the meeting and look forward to welcoming all the new and returning presenters! Host Committee is ready to welcome you to New England
The 2023 Annual Meeting Host Committee is hard at work planning the theme and plenary speakers and raising funds to make the meeting the most successful ever! The FMEC is grateful to the 15 institutions (see list below) who are being represented by over 30 individuals on the Host Committee.

Help lead our integrative health project
From 2020-2022, the FMEC convened 17 clinics and training programs for an integrative health learning community. In 2023, thanks to the generous support of the Samueli Foundation, the FMEC will continue this important work, increasing access to integrative health education via FMEC webinars, Annual Meeting programs, learning collaboratives, and more. We need your leadership to make this program strong! Many faculty in the FMEC region are currently teaching or developing curricula for IH training – please share your expertise with us. If you are interested in speaking or serving on a leadership group for the FMEC’s efforts, please contact Rebecca Bouck at [email protected].
Attend the Direct Primary Care Summit in June
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand the scope of your direct primary care (DPC) practice, you’ll find the expertise you need to level up at DPC Summit, June 15–18, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The event will help you discover the range of DPC options available in defining a DPC practice, network with other DPC enthusiasts, and connect with expert vendors who offer the patient-centered solutions you need. The IMPLICIT project will hold its spring meeting in-person in Philadelphia, PA at the Inn at Penn on Friday, March 24, 2023, from 8:45am to 4pm. Register IMPLICIT 2023 Spring Meeting Registration.
A Zoom option is available. IMPLICIT teams are also participating in the March of Dimes March for Babies in April in both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia! Nominate colleagues and faculty for AAFP medical education awards
Show the country that the best family medicine educators are in the northeast U.S. by nominating a colleague or faculty for the AAFP’s Thomas W. Johnson Award for Career Contributions to Family Medicine Education and the Exemplary Teaching Awards. Nominations are open until March 24. The Johnson Award is presented annually to an AAFP member who has made outstanding contributions to education for family medicine in undergraduate, graduate and continuing education spheres. The AAFP Exemplary Teaching Awards acknowledge AAFP members who deserve recognition for excellence in teaching, as well as individuals who have implemented outstanding educational programs and/or developed innovative teaching models.
Andrew Weil Center offers complimentary summit registration for FMEC
The Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine is holding its virtual Integrative Medicine Summit 2023: Translating Science into Clinical Practice on Friday, April 28, 2023, from 8am to 5pm Pacific Time. This virtual event will explore some of integrative health's hottest topics, including mental health, novel approaches to gut health, and new paradigms in healthcare. FMEC members can use the code FMEC to register for free, thanks to the Weil Center’s partnership with the FMEC (complimentary registration does not include CME credit). Pulse writing contest deadline is March 31

FMEC leader is STFM President-elect
Congratulations to Dr. Joseph W. Gravel, Jr., on being named STFM 2023-2024 President-Elect. Dr. Gravel is a long-time FMEC supporter and served on our Board for many years. He left the northeast to serve as professor and chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, but continues to be active with the FMEC which we appreciate! Congratulations, Joe!
Applications open for Maine Arts and Humanities in Medicine graduate certificate program
The Maine Arts and Humanities in Medicine graduate certificate program at the University of Maine is now accepting applications for fall 2023. The program brings together arts and humanities graduate students with medical practitioners to explore approaches to health and well-being. The 15-credit certificate, designed to be completed in a year, focuses on the role and function of arts and humanities in helping support and promote well-being for health care providers and, indirectly, their patients. The Graduate Certificate in Arts and Humanities in Medicine is a concentration in UMaine Intermedia Programs and supported by the university’s Institute of Medicine. Since 1987, the country has celebrated March is Women’s History Month. Government proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the US and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
