Each month, we hope to highlight one of our special board members. The idea is to give a glimpse into SCC’s leadership for new members and volunteers. And add a little fun for those who have been a part of SCC for a while now! Please enjoy this Q&A with our board president!
Get to Know Ellen Giduz!
Your favorite game or sport:
Favorite sport to play is ping pong (I'm not very athletic) Favorite to watch: Many, but maybe major league baseball on TV or minor league baseball live (while eating a hotdog).
Who's your hero?
My church music director, Kevin Turner. He is so gifted musically and is a genius at forming friendships with people of all ages. He always makes you feel special.
Your favorite book:
So many books, so little time! Can't say which adult book I like best, but my favorite as a child was No Children, No Pets by Marian Holland. I must have read it forty times, and my daughter loved it, too.
A good movie you have recently watched:
Now there's a challenge. I haven't seen a really good movie in years. My all-time favorite is The Commitments (1997), with Billy Elliott (2000), and The Intouchables (2011) close behind.
Your favorite local spot to eat:
I'll eat almost anywhere, but my longtime favorite isn't local: it's Lexington Barbecue in Lexington, NC. Well worth a 100 mile round trip for the best chopped pork barbecue, coleslaw, hush puppies and sweet tea with crushed ice in the world!
Your favorite vacation spot:
We took an opera tour based in Verona, Italy and fell in love with the place.
What words do you live by?
"Try to be nice."
Your favorite memory with SCC:
I have so many. Probably the time I felt I had done my most meaningful service as a volunteer was when I dropped everything on a Sunday afternoon to take a member, who was very fragile and had no transportation, to say goodbye to a dying friend she hadn't been able to visit in years. She spent several hours with her, and learned shortly after she got home that her friend had passed away right after she left. I was so glad I'd been able to provide that experience for her.
Any other hobbies, interests, or facts about you:
I enjoy reading above all other hobbies, and do crossword puzzles and sudokus every day. I love singing in choirs. At various times in my life I've enjoyed embroidery, making dollhouse rooms, taking walks, exercise classes, sewing, cooking, gardening, jigsaw puzzles, taking classes, window shopping and traveling. My claim to fame is that I won the 1973 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award in high school. Not exactly what we women's libbers were aspiring to back then!
