CFCE Daily Activities and Resources
Dear CFCE Families,

One of my favorite childhood memories were camping with my family. Every summer we did at least 2 big camping trips. When my children were little we did a lot of camping. There's something about being outside all day, cooking over a campfire and being together that makes it special. I'm not going to lie, camping is a lot of work, and you have to be prepared, but if you take the time to plan, and you don't mind being dirty you will have a good time. This newsletter is dedicated to the FUN OF CAMPING!

REMINDER: Now that summer is here, several of the CFCE staff will be off for the summer, including: Michele D., Leslie R. and Karen M. Other staff may be working at reduced hours. So this week, we will only be doing a newsletter on Mon-Wed-Fri, and starting the week of July 6th we will be doing a weekly newsletter to inform you of what new and fun programs we are having!!

Don't forget to check our Facebook page . We are posting tips and activities every day. And as always, check our CFCE Calendar. We are posting this email in addition to adding new LIVE ZOOM EVENTS and VIRTUAL PROGRAMS!

Ms. Gina and the entire CFCE Staff .

Camping with kids
Camping with kids may seem like a tough challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Spending time with your children away from screens and other distractions is really fun. Passing on a family tradition and strengthening relationships are a couple of reasons  why people camp .
Below are a few suggestions to make your family outing fun and enjoyable, and keep your sanity at the same time!

Set Reasonable Expectations (or Expect the Unexpected) Face it —your first, second, or even tenth camping trip with the kids may not go as planned.
Things happen: Muddy hands and faces, s'mores matted in hair, a leaky tent, or a late night trip to the bathroom. It can really test your patience. Going into a trip knowing that there will be bumps, helps when dealing with them as they arise. They also make great memories and stories later in life. (Pro tip: Refer to any trial or tribulation as an adventure. As in, “Racing down the mountain during that hailstorm sure was an adventure!”)

How to Go Camping With a Toddler or Baby

When my sister-in-law told me that she was going to go on a camping trip with two kids under the age of two, I thought she was crazy. Babies and camping? Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

But as it turns out, many families love the adventure of camping, even with little ones in tow. There's tons of fresh air, the smell of the fire and the warmth it provides at night, and endless fun outside as you explore nature together. Camping with a toddler or baby is possible and even more than that, it can be enjoyable too. Here are a few tips for making the most of your family's first camping experience.
Outdoor Activities While Camping with Toddlers & Preschoolers
  • Create a Dig Site for your toddler’s trucks and shovels
  • Bring a 5 Gallon bucket for lots of splashing fun!
  • Assign simple chores such as kindling gathering to keep toddlers busy!
  • Have some fun camping crafts for your toddlers (see below!)
  • Play some fun camping games for toddlers such as scavenger hunts (included in my printable camping pack!) and bucket toss with rocks!
  • Bring chalk and let them decorate the camp site!
  • Use a kiddie pool filled with water to cool off during the heat of the day!
  • Pack open ended toys that are multi use and durable (trucks!)
  • Play some fun camping activities at night too! (Use glowsticks in waterbottles and play bowling for example!)
  • Make sure to bring camping books for your toddler for when it’s too hot to play!
  • Plan fun family campground activities such as s’mores, story telling and camp song singing! (songs included in my camping planner!)
  • Make sure to go on a nature walk and observce any animals in the area! Toddlers LOVE seeing any animals (Even squirrels!)

Camping Mac n' Cheese

This Mac n Cheese recipe is the easiest and cheesiest make ahead meal! Get ready for the best camping dinner experience you've ever had.

  • 4.5 cups elbow macaroni
  • 24 oz prepared Alfredo sauce just over half a jar
  • 1.5 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.75 cup mozzarella cheese
  • 0.75-1.5 cup half and half or whole milk
  •  Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water.
  2. Stir alfredo sauce into the cooked pasta with the three cheeses and enough milk to keep things loosey goosey. {This is so your mac and cheese doesn't dry out while it's staying cool.} Stir in salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Divide between four mini aluminum pie tins {or one big one}, sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Spray one side of aluminum foil with more nonstick cooking spray and cover each individual mac and cheese portion, sprayed side down, facing the food. Seal well. Store in a large plastic food storage bag in a cooler until ready to cook.
  4. Prepare a fire and let it burn down to the coals. Place a cooking rack over top that would be 2-3 inches above. Place each pie tin over the hot coals and cook 8-10 minutes or until hot. Remove from fire and serve immediately.
  5. **SHORTCUT MAC AND CHEESE DIRECTIONS**You can also just bake these at home in a glass or ceramic baking dish at 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until hot and melted. Easy peasy!
