In a world often dominated by busy schedules and digital interactions, the power of human connection is more crucial than ever. Volunteerism draws individuals together in a shared purpose and ignites positive change within our communities. As we navigate all our daily commitments, the significance of volunteer connections emerges as a pillar of social cohesion, forming relationships that remind us of the “why.” Why we often rearrange our day for a SCC Member, why we take a little extra time to chat with them on the phone, and why we know our Member visits and transports are more than just a commitment.
For SCC volunteer Cindy Dunn, the why is very simple – “I want to do something that helps people, something that people need.” And every Friday, that is exactly what she does for longtime SCC Member Betsy. The two have clicked since day one, conversing with such ease it seems as if they have known each other for years. They have a sweet banter with each other, covering topics from Betsy’s life in the Caribbean to the weight of her handbag, the two laughing as they say it could be deemed as a weapon. When appointments go sideways and traffic makes them late, Betsy is appreciative that she has Cindy to lean on and knows she is always willing to lend a hand. As the two part ways on Friday afternoons, they embrace and swap a friendly "love you, see you next week." "It's the kind of relationship that I love hearing about and makes my heart so happy," says Andrea McRorie, SCC's Director of Volunteers. She continued, "All our volunteers and Members have so much love to give, it's really special when they share their stories."
Cindy embodies the true essence of so many of our Senior Community Connections volunteers: selfless, giving, and loving. SCC is grateful, proud, and honored to work with each and every one of you. Thank you for caring about our Members, forging friendships, and offering a listening ear day after day. By extending your helping hands to others, we hope you are enriching your own lives and contributing to a more compassionate and interconnected world.
