Seventh annual Disability Pride Festival promotes inclusivity for all

In an effort to promote disability visibility, more than 50 exhibitors gathered Saturday at the Disability Pride Festival.

The event was hosted by local poet and organizer Tee S. Banks, who welcomed disabled musicians and activists to the Tenney Park stage in Madison.

Many of the exhibitors present at the festival were organizations that offer services for people with disabilities, such as the boxing organization Every Body Boxing or the human rights organization Disability Rights Wisconsin. Tell Your Senators: Fund the Money Follows the Person Program

The future of the Money Follows the Person (MFP) program that has helped more than 91,000 seniors and individuals with disabilities move out of nursing homes and institutions is in jeopardy!

Background: MFP significantly improves the lives of older adults and people with disabilities by assisting them to transition out of institutional settings. By favoring community-based services, states save money and see better outcomes. That’s why nearly every state has participated in the program!

Independent evaluations have proven MFP improves the quality of life for individuals and has reduced Medicaid and Medicare expenditures by approximately 23%. Without reauthorization, states will stop transitions to the community. Without action NOW, more people will be stuck in institutions. Click here to take action.

The Arc-Dane County Members Participate in Fishing Has No Boundaries

Fishing Has No Boundaries, Madison Chapter provided two days of fishing and fun, Saturday and Sunday, July 13-14 at Governor Nelson State Park. Beginning in 1994, the Madison event has provided two days of fun on the water, experienced guides, boats & bait, adaptive fishing gear, fish cleaning, food & beverages, & memorabilia hats & shirts!

The event was supported by over 300 volunteers and sponsors. The Arc-Dane County was a sponsor of the event, providing funding and an expert guide for one of the boats! Current Executive Board Vice President Bob Ross served as a helper and guide on one of the more than forty boats used in the event. “It was a great experience for everyone involved—lots of smiles and laughter all around. What a great time,” he said.

Individuals fished, and caught, several types of fish. They also had the opportunity to drive a boat on a warm sunny day on Lake Mendota. Click here for photos.
