SENIOR LIVING

Coping with Stress During Uncertain Times: Hurricanes, Elections, and the Holidays

In recent months, all of us have collectively faced, and continue to navigate, an overwhelming trifecta of stressors: the devastation caused by the recent hurricanes, the intensity of the upcoming election, and the approaching holiday season. Each of these events can stir unpleasant feelings: natural disasters create feelings of helplessness, elections heighten uncertainty about the future, and the holidays often add emotional and financial pressures. Of course, each piece of the anxiety puzzle looks different for everyone, but the collective struggle can offer a beautiful opportunity for connection and fellowship.

Below are some ideas to help you manage your emotions during this heightened time of stress:

  1.  Acknowledge Your Feelings: Noticing and acknowledging your thoughts and feelings is the first step towards healing.
  2.  Limit Media Exposure: The news and social media are designed to entice you consume more—their ratings and finances depend on our views. Know this and set boundaries on what you allow yourself to consume; keep in mind that no one's mental health improves after watching the news.
  3.  Stay Connected: Often, in moments of stress, we feel as though we are alone, and that no one will understand our hardships. In this moment, we are collectively coping with many of the same emotions. Talking about your stressors may even help someone else who is struggling in a similar way.
  4.  Practice Mindfulness & Self-Care: Use grounding techniques like deep breathing or meditation to stay present. Prioritize your sleep, exercise, nutrition and remember to be kind to yourself.
  5.  Focus on What You Can Control: It's never helpful to worry about things beyond our control. For each stressor, think of something proactive you can do to help ease your mind and eliminate feelings of helplessness. For example: for the election-vote, for the hurricane-volunteer your time or donate money to organizations in need, for the holidays-set realistic expectations.
  6.  Seek Support: If stress becomes overwhelming, don't hesitate to reach out to Senior Community Connections for additional support.

While we can’t control everything, using these strategies can help us navigate uncertainty with resilience. Taking proactive steps and seeking support can ease the emotional load and help you manage stress effectively during these challenging times. Also, remember that this is just a moment in time. "This too shall pass." The struggles and hardships we face do not last forever. We are all sharing in this experience together and have the opportunity to reach out and support one another through these unprecedented times.

Please join us for an open forum of discussion and support around these topics at the Davidson Library on November 12th at 1 PM.
