We invite you to view " Lifting Our Voices for Caregivers ," a new video by the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition (NYSCRC). REST Master Trainer Doris Green, who is director of NYSCRC, shares her personal experiences of being a caregiver, and describes the need for respite care in the state of New York.

State Updates

A Companion course will take place on June 2, at  Aitkin County CARE  (Coordinating Area Resources Effectively), an organization that enhances and promotes the independence, dignity, value and well-being of older and disabled adults and those who care for them.
Living at Home of the Park Rapids Area will hold a Companion course on June 6, at Citizens National Bank, Park Rapids. The goal of the organization is to mobilize volunteers and other community resources to enable seniors to remain in the home of their choice.
A Companion course will take place on  June 13 , at  Mahube-Otwa Community Action Partnership , whose mission is to empower people to self-sufficiency.
Assumption Community Faith in Action will offer a Companion course on June 14.
Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota  will hold two Companion courses this month: on June 4, at the United Way, Rochester, and on June 11 and 13, at Catholic Charities, Mankato. See details .
Three REST trainers from Northwest Community Action and Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota will attend a REST Master Trainer course, on June 20-21, in Addison, Ill.
A Companion class took place on May 23 , at Centennial United Methodist Church, Roseville, through Lyngblomsten , an organization that provides healthcare, housing and services for older adults.
A Companion course took place on May 30-31, at Grand Rapids United Methodist Church. The training took place through ElderCircle, whose mission is to maintain the independence of seniors by linking them, their families and caregivers to services, enabling them to remain in their homes longer. New York

A Request for Applications opportunity is being offered through the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition , for two to four $2,500-$5,000 Mini Grants, for local and/or regional agencies to develop and/or expand volunteer respite programs across the state. Completed applications must be submitted by June 25. Learn more here

A Caregiver Lunch & Learn workshop will take place on June 2, at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The workshop is one of several that will take place across the country through Caregiver Action Network. The goal of the workshops, entitled, "Shared Decision Making for Family Caregivers and Patients," includes increasing the ability of family caregivers and care receivers to use research in making important healthcare decisions. A Caregiver Simulation Event will take place on June 15 , at First United Methodist Church, Horseheads, through the Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care, in partnership with the New York State Caregiving and Respite Coalition. The simulation allows participants to experience a fraction of the challenges caregivers face, day in and day out. Each participant will be assigned a role, and will have tasks, dilemmas and opportunities to navigate throughout the session. More details here .

Six individuals completed a Train-the-Trainer course, on May 9-10 , in Hillside, through Voice of Care, a service organization of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. See their photo .
A REST Master Trainer course will take place on June 20-21 , in Addison. The course prepares experienced REST trainers to conduct the two-day Train-the-Trainer course and to mobilize REST training throughout their communities. See details.  


A Companion course will take place on June 5, at Veterans Hall, Carson City, through Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Learn more

A Companion course will take place on June 2, at Els Center of Excellence, Jupiter, through the Unicorn Children's Foundation. See this promotional video from the REST Trainer who will conduct the class.

Two REST trainers from Unicorn Children's Foundation and Florida Atlantic University - Center for Autism and Related Disabilities will attend a REST Master Trainer course, on June 20-21, in Addison, Ill.

Upper Peninsula Commission on Area Progress (UPCAP) will hold a Train-the-Trainer event on June 5-6, in Escanaba. See details .
UPCAP  held two Companion courses last month: on May 23,at Copper Country Mental Health Institute, Houghton, and on May 10, in L'Anse.

Na Hoaloha now has 22 Companions trained since the Maui-based service organization implemented the REST Program in August 2016. Since then, Companions have logged in 1,914 hours of respite, allowing caregivers to take a break.

Ohana Fuels recently contributed to Na Hoaloha , through its Fuel up. Do good. Community Giving Program, which provides ongoing donations to nonprofits and charities in Maui and Hawaii. In addition, Na Hoaloha will hold a fundraising car wash on June 16, at Ohana Fuels at Minit Stop, Kahului. See details.

Na Hoaloha held its Volunteer Recognition luncheon on April 11 , presenting George Gonzalez with the 2018 Presidential Volunteer Service Gold Award, for contributing 634 volunteer hours. See more information.


The 2018 Aging and Adult Services Conference will take place on Sept. 18-20 , at the Natchez Convention Center, through the Mississippi Department of Human Services. Learn more .

"Caring for the Congregation" will take place on June 28 , at Waterstone Community Church, Littleton. The event will focus on equipping faith communities with tools to support families facing disability and health challenges.   See details .


Aging Well in Arizona Aging Summit will take place on Sept. 20-21 , at Sheraton Mesa at Wrigleyville West, through the Arizona Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Register here .


Alzheimer's/dementia support groups and caregiving support groups continue to take place through the Family Caregiver Support Program of the Stanislaus County Aging and Veterans Services. See upcoming events and other details .

More than 100 seniors and their guests recently attended the first annual Senior Ball , a fundraiser for the Stanislaus Senior Foundation , in Modesto. In addition to dancing and celebrating together, participants had the chance to enjoy music from a local high school's Jazz Band, and food prepared by another high school's culinary class. National Family Caregiver Support Group meetings continue to take place place monthly , in Cookeville and Livingston, through the Area Agency on Aging and Upper Cumberland Development District. The sessions assist caregivers in making decisions and solving problems related to their caregiving role. Learn more .

Spectrum Generations will hold "Golf Fore a Cause," on June 7 , at the Brunswick Golf Club. All proceeds will benefit programs that help seniors and disabled adults maintain independent and healthy lives. Learn more .
