State Updates


Lyngblomsten, an organization that provides healthcare, housing and services for older adults, will hold a Companion class on May 23, at Centennial United Methodist Church, Roseville.

REST continues to build momentum in the state as  several upcoming Companion courses are planned in June at the following organizations:   Aitkin County CARE (Coordinating Area Resources Effectively), Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota Living at Home of the Park Rapids Area, and   Mahube-Otwa Community Action Partnership.


WJMN TV featured a REST trainer from Upper Peninsula Commission on Area Progress (UPCAP). See the news clip  here .

UPCAP will hold a Train-the-Trainer event on June 5-6 , in Escanaba.  See  details .

UPCAP recently held several Companion courses , at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain; at Menominee-Delta-Schoolcraft-Community Action Agency, Escanaba, and at Copper Country Mental Health Institute, Houghton.


A Train-the-Trainer course will take place on May 9-10 , in Hillside, through Voice of Care, a service organization of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. See  information .

A REST Master Trainer course will take place on June 20-21 , in Addison. The course prepares experienced REST trainers to conduct the two-day Train-the-Trainer course and to mobilize REST training throughout their communities. See course  details .

New York

A Train-the-Trainer event will take place on May 17-18 , at CareFirst, Painted Post. See  information .

A Train-the-Trainer course will take place on May 31-June 1 , at Valley Chapel Free Methodist Church, Warsaw.  Details  here .

Two Companion courses recently took place, at Woodland Pond, New Paltz, and at CareFirst, Painted Post.

Aging services specialists, caregiver coalition members and other professionals are invited to Regional Caregiver Forums, "Caregiving and Respite Across the Lifespan: Linkages and Partnerships," which take place on May 8, in Buffalo; May 15, in Suffern, and May 23, in Lake Placid, through the Association on Aging in New York. The forums will allow participants to strengthen their network of partners, and share issues, needs, and ideas on behalf of caregivers they help serve during afternoon listening sessions. A Train-the-Trainer course will take place on May 17-18 , at the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division, Las Vegas. See  details .

Twelve individuals completed a Companion class on April 14 , at Humboldt General hospital, Winnemucca, through Nevada Aging and Disabilities Services Department. See photos from their training course here .


A Train-the-Trainer event will take place on July 17-18,  at the Lee Russell Council of Governments, Opelika. See  information .

"Helping Those Who Care" will take place on May 18 , at North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments, Decatur. The interactive class is designed to introduce caregivers to simple assistive technology devices and emergency preparedness information and supplies. See information.


Twenty-five individuals completed a REST Essentials course, on April 19 , at Itawamba Community College , Fulton. The training took place prior to "The Fearless Caregiver - Senior Adults Conference," which included a resource fair, and sessions on such topics as senior safety, navigating legal services, and home health vs. hospice care. A Companion course took place on April 24, at Grandma's Place , Royal Palm Beach.Grandma's Place provides shelter services for children who have suffered abuse or neglect, respite care for caregivers, and a family support program for parents/caregivers of children with special needs.


The Massachusetts Council on Aging  will host a Train-the-Trainer event, on July 17-18.  Learn more  here .  

Older Americans Month is celebrated by the Area Agency on Aging in Stanislaus County   by selecting one outstanding senior volunteer for each of the five supervisorial districts. A special reception and recognition will take place on May 15, during the Board of Supervisors meeting, in Modesto. See details.

To celebrate Older Americans Month, a variety of events will take place throughout May in Stanislaus County: a Senior Awareness DaySenior Ball and a Silver Stars talent show.  


In honor of Older Americans Month , the Office of the Mayor and County Agency on Elderly Affairs will host an Older Americans Recognition Ceremony and festival this month, to honor Kauai's kupuna, or elders. See article for details.

The Larimer County Office on Aging will hold an awards ceremony on May 10 , to honor one outstanding senior volunteer and one outstanding family caregiver in the community. The event is in honor of Older Americans Month. See article .


A Fun Fair will take place this month in Butte , to celebrate Older Americans Month. The event includes games, entertainment, exercise demonstrations, bowling, lunch and hourly raffles. See information .


Family caregivers, professionals, and state and national representatives are invited to a day of learning, networking and planning, during the Statewide Lifespan Respite Summit, on May 23, at the Nashville Public Library Conference Center. The purpose of the Summit is to strengthen state and community partnerships to sustain Lifespan Respite activities, develop strategies to maximize use of existing respite resources, and identify and leverage new respite funds. To celebrate Older Americans Month , the Southwest Tennessee Development District Area Agency on Aging & Disability will host a Senior Expo, on May 24, at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, Jackson. The sports-themed event will include games, lunch, entertainment and educational sessions. See  details .


The St. Louis Area Agency on Aging will host the 21st Annual Spring Jubilee on May 11, at the Upsilon Omega Foundation, St. Louis. The event, to celebrate Older Americans Month, will include free lunch, music, health screenings and the opportunity to meet service providers. See information .


An Older Americans Month Celebration: "Return to the Swing Era" will take place on May 24 , in Kenosha. The event, sponsored by Kenosha County ADRC, includes an annual award luncheon, live music, raffle and door prizes. See information .


In honor of Older Americans Month , the Cleveland Department of Aging will host the 29th Annual Senior Day, on May 24, at  Cleveland Public Hall. The event will include an information fair, lunch and entertainment. See more information here .


The 21st Annual 50+ Festival will take place on May 8-9 , at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, Lebanon, in honor of Older Americans Month. The event will include entertainment, exhibitors, health screenings and information sessions on such topics as infection control, cholesterol and stress management. See more information here .
