Voting is the key. We all know that voter turnout in 2024 will determine the fate of our country.
Voting is at the center of what our interns do. They work to get out the vote in rural communities of color and among youth in states where every vote is critically important – this year, Georgia and North Carolina.
Now voting is going to be at the center of our name. As we start 2024, the year of the election that will determine so much, we are changing our name to emphasize the centrality of voting in our work. Our new name? STUDENTS FOR VOTING JUSTICE.
Our internship program isn’t changing. Our paid college student interns will still be recruited primarily from historically black colleges and universities in the South. Their voter outreach will still focus on reaching rural communities of color with handwritten postcards and phone calls. They will still design social media ad campaigns to reach young people with urgent messages about the importance and mechanics of voting. They will still benefit from training in political organizing, leadership, and digital marketing skills. And they will still be mentored by dedicated volunteers.
The only thing that will change is our name. We believe that this change will clarify what we do as we seek both to broaden our donor base so that our program can grow and to recruit interns on new campuses.
We hope that this new year will bring a surge in voter turnout among those with the most at stake in this election. Students for Voting Justice (SVJ) is dedicated to doing everything in our power to make that happen. Our new name reflects our resolve. With your support, we will work to make our wildest dreams of record voter turnout come true.
