Living History: Beth Herrington Historical Downtown Walking Tour's 10th anniversary

By Sara Serrano, TDP

Local historian Beth Herrington said that many don't realize that Downtown Tahlequah has evolved significantly over time, and she is on a mission to teach locals about these changes.

Created in 2012 by Herrington and Tahlequah Main Street Association, the self-guided walking tour celebrated its 10th anniversary last Thursday. As a part of her tour, Herrington offered her wisdom after working in Tahlequah as an area historian and educator for many years.

"I was brought up to respect history and genealogy," said Herrington. "I have not been able to understand how you can know who you are if you don't know the historic past of your city and country."

Tahlequah residents will have a chance to take themselves through history as a part of a self-guided tour, which hits 13 spots all around downtown.

Tahlequah Main Street is seeking partners to help us Deck the Halls in Downtown Tahlequah

We have 42 light poles on Muskogee Ave in our downtown corridor. Our current goal is to raise enough funds for 21 of the light poles for Christmas 2023 implementation. Each light pole is $750 to sponsor and will include the personalized "gift tag" on your sponsored light pole and a Downtown Tahlequah keepsake ornament.

Can't sponsor an entire light pole?! That's okay, we still need your help! We will be raising donations to fund light poles that are not fully sponsored, future repairs, and maybe some additional decorations! Every little bit helps! So who is in to help us Deck The Halls in Downtown Tahlequah?!?!

MEET THE TEAM

TMSA COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT

Promoting Main Street takes many forms, but the ultimate goal is to position the downtown or commercial district as the center of the community and the hub of economic activity, while creating a positive image that showcases a community’s unique characteristics. This can be done through highlighting cultural traditions, celebrating and preserving important architecture and history, encouraging local businesses to market cooperatively, offering coordinated specials and sales, and hosting special events aimed at changing perceptions of the district and communicating to residents, investors, businesses, and property-owners that this place is special.
