A New Year & A Soft Skill…..”Flexibility”
Ah, The New Year, so abundant with possibilities. I’m probably still reliving exciting fireworks watched on New Year’s Eve and hanging onto holiday vibes, however visions for 2022 are already twirling around in my head. In the past, I would already have made my list of New Year resolutions. This year, I opted out of that list. After all, it is a New Year and outside of productive FSA plans and upholding good intentions, time is on my side. Nevertheless, if there is any type of personal resolve that calls out to me, it’s to fortify my flexibility. Anything is possible and I do believe in setting goals as I go along. Time moves forward whether we want it or not. Flexibility, being a soft skill, demonstrates the capacity and readiness to embrace new tasks and bumps in the road, calmly and without fuss. Being flexible allows us opportunities to constantly change and be all that we can, especially in an ever-changing atmosphere we’re still living in. Being flexible during perplexing circumstances allows for better coping methods that are more effective to help navigate these stressful situations and achieve a welcomed outcome.
This year the FSA will reach outside the box to continue supporting our spa community in Florida and work in partnership with our vendor members to achieve a higher value and standing within the spa industry.
When I reflect on the last two years, I am enlightened and encouraged at the strength of our community as a whole. Being an industry of spa leaders and vendors dedicated to spa, wellness and fitness, in spite of all the challenges regarding COVID, we have demonstrated our unity and ability to use our flexibility skills. Our capacity for problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and teamwork has been valuable in overcoming and improving the efficiency and competence of enduring these challenges. Our industry has maintained its integrity and increased its value, which I emphasize with pride.
And so, with a fresh start to a New Year, this is the perfect time to allow ourselves to be open to wise and necessary changes, pursue good intentions….and tap into our flexibility!

Cheers to Scott Vogel on his new role as Director of Spa, Wellness and Fitness, at Turnberry Ocean Colony in Sunny Isle and for returning to Florida to take on this new endeavor. An proficient leader in the Spa Industry for over 23 years, Scott previously worked on a prominent project in McKinney, Texas as Director of Spa & Fitness at Craig Ranch. This extensive multi-million-dollar renovation project building a luxury resort with a 100,000 sq. ft. spa was sold to Life Time, owners of 150+ athletic resort destinations dedicated to reshaping a healthy lifestyle of living and aging. Prior to that all-encompassing position in Texas, Scott was Director of Spa and Fitness at Fisher Island Club for over 6 years. Scott also continues his affiliation as a consultant for Spa Management Solutions since 1999. With his vast experience and a proven record as a top-notch Spa Director for leading Hotels and Resorts, Scott will inevitability spearhead his new team on a path to success. We are delighted to welcome Scott back to Florida.

Brian Brytus – Director of Spa, The Ritz-Carlton South Beach, FL
Brian has recently joined The Ritz-Carlton spa team in South Beach as their new Director of Spa. The Ritz-Carlton South Beach is known for its luxurious resort inspired by its rich history and iconic building, epitomizing the glamour of Miami Beach by welcoming both travelers and locals. Preceding this new position, Brian was the Director of Spa and Management at the Eden Roc Hotel, Miami Beach managed by WTS International leading and inspiring his spa staff. Brian also served as Department Head at Soho House & Co. in Miami Beach for over 6 year and as Department Head for the Morgans Hotel Group in Miami Beach. Brian has more than 20 years experience in hospitality, with more than 11 of those years in management. With his organizational skills and experience, he is bound to be a valuable addition to the Ritz-Carlton family in this new and exciting venture. We commend Brian for all his accomplishments and wish him the best of luck.

To me, the word "Resolution" always seemed one egg shy of a dozen. Like it had a built-in "chicken exit," remember, like in scary roller coaster lines? If you baled, you might hear a few giggles, but everyone would understand and not bug you about it after a while.
The definition above says a "firm" decision, but not a "final" decision. We all know that what once was firm, doesn't always stay that way, but that's another topic...
I suggest we switch out the "s" for a "v" and suddenly, there is a whole new force unleashed. You are now leading a revolution, fighting for something meaningful, against all odds and you WILL NOT give up.
Whatever it was that the champagne at midnight made you commit to for 2022, take a fresh look at it and see if it deserves to be your "revolution" for the year ahead

The Florida Board of Massage Therapy will hold their next quarterly board meeting on January 27th and 28th at the Guy Harvey Resort located at A1A Beach Blvd. St. Augustine, 32080.
The 2022 Florida Legislative Session starts January 11th. We will keep you updated on any and all bills that could affect the massage therapy profession, your establishment and LMT’s.

Donna Mainiero, Spa Wellness & Fitness Director, The Club at Longboat Key, Longboat Key, Florida
Donna joined the Ocean Properties Opal Collection of Spa’s eight years ago at Jupiter Beach Resort. While at Jupiter Beach Resort she developed a highly skilled team, which lead the resort and spa to being a top local destination. Proving herself as a dedicated leader within the Opal Collection she took on the role as Regional Director of Spa’s. Leading the East Coast Spa teams, offering operational, support and developing spa services that would enhance the resorts spa amenities. Donna was also an integral part of the new hires process at Jupiter Beach Resort developing and coaching all new hires of the resort on guest services standards. Encouraging the resort staff to maintain the resort’s 4 Diamond status, by creating “WOW” experiences to promote guest’s retention. In August of 2020, in midst of the Covid Pandemic and the Opal Collection of East Coast Spa’s closed, she was offered the position of Spa Wellness & Fitness Director at Longboat Key Club and relocated to Sarasota, Florida. Donna is looking forward to the next chapter of the Opal Spa’s branding the spas into being a “go to” destination for spa and wellness!!

Weight lifting, also known as resistance training, has been practiced for centuries as a way of building muscular strength. Research shows that resistance training, whether done via body weight, resistance bands or machines, dumbbells or free weights, not only helps us build strength, but also improves muscle size and can help counteract age-related muscle loss.
The ‘after-burn effect’
When we exercise, our muscles need more energy than they do when resting. This energy comes from our muscles’ ability to break down fat and carbohydrate (stored within the muscle, liver and fat tissue) with the help of oxygen. So during exercise, we breathe faster and our heart works harder to pump more oxygen, fat, and carbohydrate to our exercising muscles.
