June 2025

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, honors the end of slavery in the United States, when, on June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation two years prior.  Surprisingly, emancipation has ties to Rancho Los Alamitos. When Fred and Florence’s granddaughter, Joan Hotchkis, set out to learn her family history, she started with the homes they left in Maine. There she found the home of Rev. George W. Hathaway, Susan Hathaway Bixby's father. The residents invited her in and explained the house had been a stop on the Underground Railroad, and showed her the small room where runaway enslaved people hid on their way to freedom in Canada. Rev. Hathaway, a graduate of Andover Theological Seminary, also invited abolitionists to hold meetings in his church.

In honor of Juneteenth, Rancho Los Alamitos will be closed on Thursday, June 19th.
