Special Basketball Event

Woodgrove High School scrimmage with their varsity and JV girls' basketball teams

We plan to pull from our group 1 teams, the Lancers, Mavericks, and Bobcats, to form two teams for the scrimmage. Please email Joe Bleull and let them know if you plan to attend and which events. They need to get a headcount to make sure they can fill up the two teams.

There are two events planned:

  1. Monday, December 18 - We are invited to attend the Woodgrove girl’s basketball home game. The JV game starts at 5:45 PM, and the Varsity game starts around 7 PM.  Players should come wearing their jersey tops with a tee shirt underneath. They will recognize our Special Olympic teams at some point during the evening.
  2. Saturday, December 30 – Scrimmage at 2 PM at Woodgrove H.S. Enter through the main entrance. We will split the Lancers, Mavericks, and Bobcats into two teams to play the varsity and JV teams. Each team will play two quarters. Our players should wear their full SO uniforms.

The IMPACT Award, established in January 2022, is given to an athlete and a volunteer who has contributed to our organization in a way that exemplifies our commitment to respect, teamwork, and unity. Their behaviors and attitudes show a dedication to making themselves, their teammates, and/or their communities a place where people are valued and encouraged. These individuals promote behaviors and practices that lead to a healthier lifestyle, including sports, friendship, and acceptance.

November Athlete Award goes to Robby A.

Robby is recognized for his positive impact and enthusiasm on the bocce team. He always has a smile and spreads kindness to everyone. He represented Area 14 at the Fall Championship competition in VA Beach and has also been involved with bowling, top golf, and basketball. He is an athlete who is a joy to coach!

November Volunteer Award goes to Coach Olivia.

Olivia is Loudoun’s premier volleyball coach and has been involved in Special Olympics for six years. She is known for her encouraging words and contagious smile but also takes the time to build relationships and foster team building. This past season, she traveled with the team to the Shenandoah Games in Harrisonburg and the Fall Championships in VA Beach. She was also the 2022 recipient of Special Olympics Virginia’s Outstanding Rising Star Award.

If you want to nominate someone for an IMPACT award, please email Cynthia Clark. New winners are chosen on the 25th of every month, so nominate a deserving volunteer or athlete!!

On the last Tuesday of every month, Special Olympics Virginia goes LIVE for a Town Hall about a topic surrounding health, leadership, or advocacy. The streams are for SOVA parents and athletes to learn, connect, and engage with each other and guest speakers.
