1st Grade General Studies

This week in first grade we began a new writing unit. We are writing realistic fiction books. Our unit began with a review of small moment narratives. In small moments, we learned how to focus on one small event and stretch it out. Now we have the opportunity to create pretend characters with adventures of their own. Through imagination and real life experiences, students have created unique characters with realistic adventures and problems. Each day, we read realistic fiction and discuss various authors' crafts. Through independent work and collaboration, students are able to try out these crafts in their own writing. Soon, each student will choose a character they love and write a series about her!

One of the great challenges in Jewish education is to help students apply the beautiful ideas they learn in classic Jewish texts to their daily lives. The Yesodei Halashon program is very effective in metamorphosing the theoretical into the actual.
Yesodei Halashon is one of the many quality curricula developed by the Chofeitz Chaim Heritage Foundation. CCHF's original focus was ethical speech, but their mission has broadened to include all areas of positive character development.
Yesodei Halashon was created to help 4th and 5th grade students discover the power of positive
communication and the building blocks of friendship. Each week is dedicated to a different topic and is taught and reinforced through engaging stories, role-playing, and practical in-school and at home activities. Weekly topics include smiling, giving compliments, empathy, gratitude, admitting mistakes, how to ask for favors (this week's topic), and controlling anger, among many others.
Parents can assist their children by asking what topics they are learning and suggesting they demonstrate their new skills at home. It could be that parents have been "guinea pigs" all along without knowing it! Now, that would be an indication of a lesson well learned!
