Smart on Juvenile Justice

NJDC received the Cate gory 2 Youth Access to Justice Training and Technical Assistance  grant to provide training and technical assistance to four states, to coordinate efforts to create effective systems of juvenile defense, and to provide legal assistance to youth returning from out-of-home placement to eliminate barriers that impede their likelihood of success.

NJDC Executive Director Kim Dvorchak and Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth Director Jody Kent Lavy recently wrote for the Huffington Post about the childhood of Brendan Dassey, one of the subjects of Netflix's Making a Murderer  series.
Shackling in Maryland
The Baltimore Sun   provided horrific account of current shackling and strip-search practices in Maryland juvenile justice facilities.  NJDC staff and partners contributed to the article.
Happy Public Defense Day Juvenile Defenders!   Letter from Executive Director Kim Dvorchak

The National Juvenile Defender Center is honored to recognize the dedication and commitment of public defenders, and especially juvenile defenders across the country!  Today is the 53 rd  Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision   Gideon v. Wainright. Gideon's  establishment of the 6 th  Amendment right to counsel for adults laid the foundation for achieving the same due process protections for youth facing delinquency proceedings in  In re Gault.
