Reading aloud is a gift that creates a special bond between the reader and the audience. Children gain confidence in their own reading abilities as they read to others in small or one to one groups. Also, hearing the language of the written word takes us to a magical place, as we listen, learn and imagine a place beyond the four walls. Both the reader and the child being read to, can participate in the process, enjoying each other’s company, building necessary social skills and creating a fun, positive outlook on reading.
Often, parents stop reading to their child when they can read, believing that the child should do all the reading. This is a misconception. When children hear a more challenging text read aloud to them, they build their fluency in patterns of language, and comprehension is enhanced as discussion about the book happens naturally during the reading. Our College School students reading to our ELC students, helps foster the love of reading for all involved!
