Happy Valentine's Day!

Congrats to our Valentine's Day contest winners!

Last week, we ran a contest in the Wednesday Wave inviting staff members to share what their favourite part about working for Interlake-Eastern RHA.

We randomly selected two winners — Susan Borkowsky and Susan Walker — to win a prize. Here's what they had to say:

Susan Borkowsky, administrative assistant for public health, Selkirk Community Health Office:

I can honestly say that the groups of people I have met and worked with over the years are outstanding — kind, caring, compassionate, understanding and helpful co-workers who are available to mentor and teach along the way.

The atmosphere in which you work often depicts what your work day brings. Currently, working in the Selkirk Community Health Office, I can say that my days are usually filled with joy as I participate and watch my co-workers helping people in our community with their various needs. People are treated with dignity and are given support and hope for their future.

I am also grateful for the many opportunities to learn and grow over the years. Oh, and potlucks. ; )

Susan Walker, ER reg clerk / admitting clerk, Selkirk Regional Health Centre

The best thing that I love about my job is helping people (whether it is patients, visitors, staff, doctors).

It is a great feeling knowing you are helping someone out and making their day.

At Pine Falls Hospital, staff members shared the love of their job and teamwork by dressing in red, pink and burgundy for Valentine's Day.

Back row: Marius Velena, LPN; Harjot, HCA. Middle row: Courtney Richard, LPN; Cherry Velena, HCA, Chantal Vincent; HCA. Front row: Dianne Villamena, RN; Carmelyne Santos-Absolid, LPN; Marie Legao-Cabrera, RN; Adeline (Vicki) Reid-Kush, ward clerk.

Thank you to Adeline (Vicki) Reid-Kush for this fun submission!

A group of staff members at the Teulon Community Health Office randomly wore pink shirts and dark pants on the same day — perfect timing for Valentine's Day!

Back row: Lindsay McRae, home care scheduling clerk; Caitilin Chaves, home care relief case coordinator; Kelly Robertson, home care resource coordinator; Natalie McCall, public health nurse. Front row: Patricia Farmer, community health administration; Kim Mushaluk, home care case coordinator.

Shout out to Rowan Clark, home care case coordinator, for taking the picture. And thank you to Patricia Farmer for sharing this festive photo!

Cardiology technologist forms close connections

Nadia Goorcharan didn’t start out with plans to pursue a career in health care, but in 2006, a family health emergency sparked an intense interest in cardiology that began her journey toward becoming a cardiology technologist.

“I gained a lot of outside experience during my father’s time as a cardiac patient,” she said. "He passed in 2014, and in 2015 I entered Stenberg College’s program to become a cardiology technologist.”

Today, Nadia has been working for eight years as a cardiology technologist, supporting care at Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

Along with performing electrocardiograms and setting up Holter monitors to diagnose heart arrhythmias, Nadia and other cardiology technologists perform non-invasive cardiac tests like stress tests and ambulatory monitoring and analysis.

February is Black History Month, which aims to honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and in local communities.

This year’s theme is “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build.”

Jacob Ahiaegbe was born in Nigeria and immigrated to Canada as a teenager in 2007. He grew up in Toronto in an ethnically diverse neighbourhood before moving to Manitoba in 2015, where he worked as a community health nurse in rural and remote northern communities. Today, he serves as director of resident care at Betel Home Foundation in Selkirk.

For Jacob, Black History Month is a significant moment to mark.

“Throughout our nation’s history, minority communities have experienced racism and discrimination in various forms. Conscious and unconscious bias, as well as a lack of representation, are among many forces contributing to racism and discrimination,” he said.

“Black History Month is important to me because it provides an opportunity to recognize and honour the contribution of Black people, past and present, to our communities.”

This recognition of Black people challenges racial stereotypes and prejudice, he added.

“It also encourages conversation about the human and economic cost of racism and discrimination. We have come a long way as a society in promoting equity, diversity and inclusion,” said Jacob, who is a registered nurse with a master’s degree in business administration.

“So it is important that we celebrate our collective success while continuing the important work of building awareness and changing attitudes to dismantle racism in all its forms.”

February is Therapeutic Recreation Month!

Lori Martin, regional recreation manager, and Kirsten Bates, recreation coordinator for Kin Place Personal Care Home

Entertainer Adam T Elvis and recreation facilitator Diane Dmytriw at Lac du Bonnet Personal Care Home.

Thank you to Lori Martin, regional recreation manager, for this submission.

Send out some love to your hard-working therapeutic recreation staff at all the facilities this month since February has been deemed by the Manitoba government as Therapeutic Recreation Month.

Therapeutic recreation staff develop specific therapeutic interventions for residents that promote independence, engages residents in programming of interest, keeps residents socially integrated and active with their community and they utilize leisure activities as a means to encourage, promote and improve the overall quality of life of a resident.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my staff for all their hard work, commitment to bettering the lives of others and for their amazing creativity! You make such a difference for so many!

Arborg opens arms for new recruit from Philippines

The Arborg community recently grew by one more family who recently arrived from the Philippines.

Deanna Fernando landed in Manitoba in early February as a participant in the Philippines recruitment initiative, along with her husband Renz and their 10-year-old son Darence.

In the Philippines, Deanna worked in private health care. Now that she’s in Manitoba, she’s working as a health-care aide at Arborg Personal Care Home.

“What I find the most fulfilling and rewarding working in health care is that I get to make a difference in the world — seeing the positive impact on my patients’ lives and knowing that I am directly helping patients overcome their health challenges,” she said.

“A sense of purpose is what drives me to work every day. Too often, we forget all the other things that makes our job what it truly is: to be compassionate and having a desire to make a difference not just with other people but also within ourselves.”

She’s grateful to community members and coworkers who have helped her family get settled into their new Arborg home.

“Our new community is safe, welcoming and multicultural. They have welcomed us with open arms. We quickly feel at home. My co-workers and ‘kababayans’ (Filipino community) truly helped and guided us to settle in during our first week here in Arborg through their genuine kindness and generosity. I am grateful for all the support and warm welcome we received in our new community,” Deanna said.

“I genuinely want to take a moment and give a huge thanks to IERHA for giving me the chance to achieve my dreams together with my family. All the guidance and support that they have given me are overwhelming and everything is truly appreciated. Thank you for believing in me and giving this opportunity. I’m looking forward to making the most of it and have the best time of my life working with your team.”

Using language to improve the health-care experience: introducing Difference en français

This February, Interlake-Eastern RHA and Manitoba’s other designated bilingual health authorities are pleased to launch the make a Difference en français campaign to help staff gain more confidence in using their French language skills with patients/clients.

Why this is important?

Communication in French not only makes health care and social services in Manitoba more accessible, it also improves quality and safety, patient health outcomes. It helps the Francophone patients/clients better understand, feel more comfortable and at ease, and make informed decisions.

Francophone patients/clients really appreciate the effort staff make to try and speak French at whatever level. To help build your French language skills, the following new website has many support and tools available. Additional IERHA resources are available here.

Our commitment to bilingual health services

The initiative is vital to ensure the delivery of equitable, high-quality care to Manitoba’s Francophone minority language communities. The initiative was made possible by financial contributions from Health Canada under the Action Plan for Official Languages 2018-2023: Investing in our Future and Santé en français (Manitoba) with the objective to increase the offer of French-language services within Manitoba.

The campaign is part of our ongoing commitment to improve health equity, to improve the quality of care our patients/residents/clients receive and to ensure sustainable health services are available to Manitoba’s Francophone population. Learn more about French Language Services.
