Chief of Police Announces Retirement

Novato’s Police Chief, Matthew McCaffrey, will be retiring after 39 years of public service.

Chief McCaffrey started his career with Novato back in 2015 as Captain, overseeing the Operations and Administration Divisions, and promoted to Chief in November 2019. Prior to his service with Novato, he held positions with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office and Santa Rosa Junior College District.

We wish him all the best during his well-deserved retirement.

City Begins Repairs & Upgrades on Grant Avenue Tree Lights

City contractors have begun work on a project to repair, replace, and upgrade the tree lighting and electrical circuits along Grant Avenue in Downtown.

The project will be replacing the aged and failing electrical outlets that power the Grant Avenue tree lights. Around 120 outlets will be upgraded and several of the LED tree light strands will also be repaired or replaced. The aging circuits, wiring and outlets were no longer able to handle the load of existing tree lights and required a major overhaul to ensure safe and functional lighting.

In addition, tree lights will be installed on the remaining trees on Grant Avenue that don’t yet have lights.

City crews will be turning lighting circuits back on as soon as repairs are complete—the work is expected to take about 3 weeks to complete barring any weather delays.
Novato Blvd Improvements: Diablo to Grant Avenues

We want to hear from you! The Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Novato Boulevard Improvements project is available online for your review. The comment period is now open through Friday, January 14, 2022 at 3pm.

In 2018, the Novato City Council approved a new 3-lane layout for the Novato Boulevard Improvements Project (CIP #01-004) between Diablo Avenue and Grant Avenue. The conceptual design includes sidewalks and bicycle lanes in both direction, utility undergrounding, new traffic signals at Diablo Ave., Seventh St., and Grant Ave among other improvements.
Homeless Outreach in Novato banner
Update: Temporary Camp at Lee Gerner Park
On November 29, construction work on the court-ordered Temporary Camp at Lee Gerner Park started as City crews worked to help park occupants relocate out of the construction zone.

Nearby businesses, residents, and visitors to the park may notice an increase in the number of tents at the north end of the park as several people and their personal items were moved out of the construction zone.

The City’s contractor has completed the realignment of a portion of the park fence and pathway, graded the site, and already began setting fence posts for the Temporary Camp. Work on the Temporary Camp is expected to take 2-3 weeks to complete, however materials shortages and wet weather could extend the duration.

Once finished, the City will work with park occupants to relocate them into the Temporary Camp or offer them other housing opportunities or services.

Additional information on homeless outreach in Novato, including biweekly updates on encampment activity is available at novato.org/homelessness.
