New Leaf Blower Rules
The Novato City Council has adopted new rules about using leaf blowers within Novato city limits. The newly adopted ordinance will go into effect on October 13, 2022. Some highlights of the changes include:
~ Gas-powered leaf blowers are effectively banned city-wide with enforcement planned for July 1, 2023 for most properties.
~ Effective October 13, 2022 leaf blowers can only be used between the hours of 8am and 6pm Mondays through Saturdays and between the hours of 10am and 6pm on Sundays and official federal holidays.
~ Also effective October 13, 2022, it is unlawful to allow any leaves, dirt, or any other debris to be blown by a leaf blower onto adjacent private property, public property, the storm drain system, or the public right-of-way.
To allow time for landscape service providers and homeowners to purchase electrically-powered leaf blowers, the prohibition of gas-powered leaf blowers will not be enforced until July 1, 2023 for most properties, and enforcement will begin on July 1, 2024 for parcels of ten acres or more with a land use designation of agricultural or conservation.

Eyes Up, Be Alert
Let’s Make our Streets Safer for Everyone! From mid-October through the end of November, you’ll see bright and colorful banners and lawn signs popping up all over Marin asking people to keep their “Eyes Up” and be alert. These signs will be asking drivers to slow down, watch when turning and look for pedestrians in the crosswalk; bicyclists to yield to pedestrians and to follow the rules of the road; And those walking to pay attention when crossing the street.
The Eyes Up, Marin Campaign is part of the Street Smarts Program and Safe Routes to Schools, locally funded programs of the Transportation Authority of Marin.

Ojos Aribba, Esta Alerta

Volunteers Rally to Support Coastal Cleanup Day 2022
The Novato community rose to the occasion for Coastal Cleanup Day on September 17, 2022, with three separate litter clean-up events happening across the City!
~ 40+ student athletes from the Novato High School’s Jr. Varsity and Varsity teams and 10 coaches/parents picked up litter along Alameda del Prado, collecting 10 bags of trash and one tire.
~ 8 volunteers from the Novato Streetscape Committee partnered with Marin County Parks volunteers and staff from Caltrans to clean up litter in the Binford Road area, near Deer Park Reserve. 400 lbs. of trash and 40 lbs. of recyclables were collected as part of this clean-up.
~ Volunteers also picked up litter in the Scottsdale Pond and Marsh area, three segments of Novato Creek (downstream from Grant Avenue), and the creek area in Pioneer Park. A big shout-out to Recology for providing a large debris box for the trash collected by volunteers.
Litter in the environment can end up in our storm drains, our creeks, the SF Bay, and eventually the ocean. The timing of the clean-ups could not have been more perfect, with the first major downpour of the season occurring on the following day.
We are #NovatoProud of all volunteers that took part. Thank you!

Stay Healthy Novato
The best way to reduce the risk of becoming infected with a respiratory virus, whether the flu or coronavirus, is to practice good hygiene:
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Wear a face covering when out in public spaces.
- Maintain 6 feet distance from those outside of your own household.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or crook of your elbow (not your hands). If you use a tissue, throw it away and wash your hands afterwards.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Get vaccinated.
