PED & BIKE IMPROVEMENTS ABOUND
(above photo: colorized bike lanes on Ignacio overpass)
Recently, the City completed a variety of projects to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, including improvements of the DeLong Avenue and Ignacio Blvd. interchanges, Olive Avenue bike lanes from Windwalker Way to Samrose Dr., and crosswalk improvements at Ignacio and S. Novato Blvds.
You may notice the day-glo green on the Ignacio overpass--this, according to the project manager and City engineer, Petr Skala, makes bike lanes more visible to drivers and helps to ensure the safety of cyclists where they are most likely to mix with heavy auto traffic. These colorized bike lanes--which are gaining popularity throughout the Bay Area--have proven to lead to better driver behavior and make bicyclists feel safer.
Olive Avenue now boasts new bike lanes on both sides of the entire length of the street, thanks to a collaboration of the City and County of Marin Public Works Departments, and there are new crosswalks and other pedestrian improvements on S. Novato and Ignacio Blvds. (
see photo below), including high-visibility signage, flashing beacons, and a mid-point refuge in the median where pedestrians can stop before completing their crossing.
