Empowering Communities through

Stormwater Education

In the fall of 2025, Kelly Flanagan and Jessie Murray reached out with plans to launch an educational series for their community focused on green initiatives they hoped to see implemented in Fair Haven and neighboring municipalities. They decided to kick off the series with a focus on stormwater and green infrastructure, and invited Dr. Christopher Obropta to lead the discussion.

After coordinating schedules, the presentation was held on Wednesday, February 4, at the Fair Haven Community Center. More than 35 residents attended an engaging and informative talk covering the basics of stormwater, a brief history of stormwater management, and the impacts of nonpoint source pollution. Dr. Obropta also shared practical examples of green infrastructure strategies that both residents and the municipality can consider to reduce flooding and improve local water quality.

Attendees were highly engaged throughout the presentation and asked thoughtful questions during the discussion that followed. We hope this event helped inspire both residential and municipal action in Fair Haven and surrounding communities to protect and improve the Navesink River's water quality.
