In 1975, Ron and Faye Gibbens founded the North Dakota Association for the Disabled (NDAD), spurred by their determination to support their son Mike, who has cerebral palsy. Faced with few resources at the time, they, along with friends and family, formed a compassionate support network that evolved into NDAD.
In its early days, NDAD faced financial hardship—by 1981, it had only $83.75 in the bank. Undeterred, the founders launched charitable gaming in 1982, raising $24,000 in six months and paving the way for expansion across Minot, Grand Forks, Williston, and Fargo by 1985.
Today, NDAD is a statewide nonprofit with six offices—in Bismarck, Dickinson, Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot, and Williston—offering direct financial support for medical needs, equipment loans, adaptive transportation, advocacy, autism programs, recreation grants, and more.
Over the past five decades, NDAD has delivered over $65 million in direct services while keeping administrative costs at just 10%, meaning 90% of every dollar reaches those who need it most.
NDAD has persevered through crises—major floods, the COVID‑19 pandemic, and legislative shifts—always adapting and reinforcing its mission to enhance lives across rural North Dakota.
Looking forward, the organization continues to meet growing needs: an aging population, rising healthcare costs, and demand for accessibility and support. Though celebrating a storied past, NDAD emphasizes that its work is only just beginning—with a future built on resilience, innovation, and purpose.
