Concert This Sunday!

Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023 @ 5:00 PM

Morningside UMC Sanctuary

We're excited to host a concert this Sunday, September 17 at 5:00 pm with Karyn Oliver! All are welcome!

Karyn Oliver is part Joan Osborne, a touch of Janis Joplin and a bit of Emmylou Harris – effortlessly oscillating from bluesy to country and back. Her musical inspirations come primarily from the eclectic mix of music to which she was exposed while growing up in the musically diverse culture of Washington, D.C.

In 2009, Karyn moved to a town called Boring, MD with a broken heart and a cheap guitar. It was from this place that she created her first solo album, Red Dress, that earned her Kerrville New Folk Finalist and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist in 2011, as well as 2010 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest winner. In 2011, Oliver moved to New York City, with a renewed heart and a better guitar. It is from this place that she created her latest solo album, Magdalene, and became a Kerrville New Folk Finalist for a second time in 2016.

2017 brought Oliver to North Carolina. She is steeping herself in the great writers of the South. In 2019 she released, “A List of Names." Learn more at www.karynoliver.com.

Wesley Groups Offered in October & November

The founder of the Methodist movement, John Wesley, met with a group of friends to invite accountability in their growth as followers of Jesus. There are 22 questions they asked themselves every day. Questions like, “Did the Bible live in me today?” and “Am I defeated in any part of my life?” and “Am I enjoying prayer?” It’s a powerful list of questions that we can practice today.

Join Pastor Jenny in a Wesley Group this fall! This one-hour gathering includes reflection on a biblical passage and space to engage the Wesley questions, along with check-ins and joys and concerns. It’s a great way to connect with others and tend our spiritual lives together.

There are two options to participate in a Wesley Group. Wednesdays at 11:00 am in person at Morningside UMC. Or Thursdays at 7:00 pm on Zoom. Both groups meet for seven weeks starting the week of October 1 through November 12. Sign up at https://forms.gle/wW3oD2CkR6bn1YpE6

Transformation Prayer Retreat

Transformations Prayer Retreat

October 1 - 6, 2023, Suttle Lake

Co-Deans: Michael Powell & Kate Conolly

We are looking forward to being together at beautiful Suttle Lake once again. The dates are Sunday, Oct. 1st through Friday the 6th. To register go to gocamping.org and type in Suttle Lake and Transformation Prayer Retreat. Our focus this year will be on a book entitled Wholehearted Faith, by Rachel Held Evans.

Evans "was part of a vanguard of progressive-Christian women who fought to change the way Christianity is taught and perceived in the United States." Evans' legacy is "her unwillingness to cede ownership of Christianity to its traditional conservative-male stewards" and that her "very public, vulnerable exploration of a faith forged in doubt empowered a ragtag band of writers, pastors, and teachers to claim their rightful place as Christians." (Emma Green, writing for The Atlantic,)

Our schedule includes three worship services each day, daily communion, times of silence and contemplative prayer, singing, optional day hikes, wonderful meals, provocative discussions and the Christian fellowship which nourishes our souls.
