CPH data analyst participated in inaugural MAR-PHTC Leadership Institute program

Center for Population Health Data Analyst Leann Lovejoy was part of the inaugural Soaring to New Heights: Mid-Atlantic Regional Public Health Training Center (MAR-PHTC) Leadership Institute program.

During the 8-month program Leann worked in multidisciplinary teams on real-world, action-oriented, "change leader" projects and focused on bridging disciplinary boundaries between public health and primary practice with the goal of improving population health.

One of the highlights of the program was the development of the project titled, "Breathing Better Together: A Comprehensive Rural Health Initiative for Chronic Respiratory Care." This initiative focused on reducing hospitalizations due to chronic lower respiratory diseases (CLRD) in the Southern Alleghenies. The project incorporated community health education campaigns, preventive health screenings, smoking cessation programs, and efforts to improve environmental health.

The experience not only enriched her professional skills, but also underscores the critical role of public health leadership in fostering healthier communities.

CPH partners with The Women's Help Center to create garden beds

CPH and The Women's Help Center have joined forces to build raised garden beds for the residents to help address food insecurity as a social determinant of health.

The green space behind the Napoleon Street location is approximately 80 cubic feet of growing space and has had garden beds for ages; however, they were overgrown.

On May 22, CPH staff spent the afternoon at The Women's Help Center digging out the garden beds, weeding, and planting.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and a time to work together to stop the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more understanding and compassionate community.

Locally, CPH is spearheading work to improve mental health and mental health provider knowledge in Cambria and Somerset counties. In 2023, CPH launched a mental health consortium for behavioral health providers to meet and share challenges and opportunities for collaboration. One of the first initiatives of the consortium was the launch of a Project ECHO educational series in collaboration with Penn State College of Medicine.
