Center for Population Health staff had the opportunity to attend the training "Why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Matters: Moving Beyond Compliance for Nonprofits" this month, hosted by The Learning Lamp, Cambria Regional Chamber, and Vision Together 2025.

Saren Stiegel, from Vokly - a Pittsburgh-based firm specializing in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) - trained a room of nonprofit staffers on DEI. Training included defining the role of DEI in organizations, examining personal cultural biases, discussing the importance of DEI in governance, services, and creating a welcoming workplace, and exploring how to build and sustain more diverse organizations.

It's Health Literacy Month

October is Health Literacy Month and a perfect time to highlight the importance of knowing and understanding your health diagnoses and care. Health literacy is the ability to read, understand, remember, and use information to make decisions about your health.

Many patients can become embarrassed by their health literacy skills making them not want to speak up to their doctors and other medical professionals to ask questions. One way to become more engaged at doctor’s appointments is by using “Ask Me 3 Questions”:

1.What is my main problem?

2.What do I need to do?

3.Why is this important for me to do this?
