Assembling and verifying buckets is another important way our volunteers support Mission Central through disaster relief efforts.
Mission Central is the largest of seven warehouses in a national disaster relief network with UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). As a member of this network, we assemble, verify, and store UMCOR buckets at our warehouse. Buckets are packed with items such as laundry detergent, scrub brushes, household cleaners, and work gloves. The following summarizes our process:
- Churches and various organizations assemble buckets at off-site locations and deliver them to Mission Central.
- Volunteers verify that buckets are packed to UMCOR specifications by reviewing the contents of each bucket. This step ensures equal distribution of resources to any individual or family who may receive a bucket.
- After verification, buckets are stored in our warehouse until needed to provide natural disaster relief domestically.
- When we receive a call for disaster relief support, buckets are loaded into trucks that travel directly to the impacted area for distribution.
To individuals like Mark, volunteering can be hard work, but well worth the sacrifice. He told us, “You go home a little tired, but you know that you’ve accomplished something.”
Volunteering is also a way to shift our perspective toward the good. Mark shared, “Everyone complains about the negativity of the world, but here you get to see the positivity.”
We are positively grateful for our volunteers who support disaster relief efforts through bucket assembly and verification!
