THIS WEEK'S EVENTS
8pm - 11pm " So, You're a Poet," presents  beat book shop 27th birthday reading
The ''So, You're a Poet'' reading series by Boulder's ''beat book shop'' has several Kerouac events on its poetry calendar. Poets who have performed in this venerable, decades-old series include the late Allen Ginsberg, Bernadette Mayer (who will be in Boulder this summer for the Summer Writing Program), Diane di Prima, Janine Pommy Vega, Anselm Hollo, and many more. The series has always been hosted by poet and Kerouac School alumnus Tom Peters, owner of the Pearl Street landmark ''beat book shop.''

The series was hosted for many years by the famous Penny Lane Cafe. In the introduction to Poems from Penny Lane Anne Waldman writes ''One thinks of the legendary Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich where the Dadaist movement was born, or the cafes and bars in San Francisco which spawned the Beat Literary Movement, also the cafe Metro and the Nuyorican Cafe, both in New York City's East Village.''
The series currently takes place in the new Laughing Goat Coffeehouse, which has strong ties to the original Penny Lane. Amiri Baraka, Miguel Algarin, Lewis MacAdams, and other poets read there during last year's Summer Writing Program. The Laughing Goat is surely a Boulder literary institution in the making.
8pm -  11pm  The Matt Human Trio
The Matt Human Trio reinvents the classic jazz trio. Straight ahead swinging, relaxed and bouncy. Contrasting bebop melodies with brilliant guitar excursions. Driving bass lines coupled with the pulse of melodic drum set. The individual personalities of each musician blend into a vibrant musical illustration.

Copper Leaf is Sawyer Bernath, a guitar-playing singer-songwriter based in Boulder, CO. He writes songs that are often bleak, occasionally redemptive, and usually about memory, aimlessness, and/or girls. His music has been compared to that of Iron & Wine, The Antlers, Frightened Rabbit, and The Beach Boys (not kidding). The first full-length Copper Leaf album, "Lay Awake", was released on 11/19/16, and is available for streaming and purchase on the Copper Leaf website.

Monica is a Colorado native and was born with music in her heart and soul. Her music is a vocal exploration of the heart. As she grows as vocalist and a songwriter, her musical reach deepens and widens into a genuine and beautiful space. Monica performs mostly with her rootsy Americana project Monocle Band, but loves the space and inspiration that comes with solo performance.

Mitchel Evan is a 22 year old songwriter from Richmond, Virginia, now living in the outskirts of Denver, Colorado. He first started playing piano at the age of 9, but it wasn't until he picked up the guitar at 13 that he discovered his passion and knack for songwriting. Mitchel writes songs with an emphasis on lyrical content and emotional delivery in an effort to map the shortest distance from his heart to the listeners'. In addition to his 4 piece rock band, Mitchel Evan and The Mangrove, the artist is working on a full length solo album and continues to write, record and tour at a prolific rate.

8pm -  11pm  Paper Moonshine
We, the five members of Paper Moonshine all come from different musical backgrounds (jazz, bluegrass, rock, classical and more) but we have one goal in common: making good music. Originally a Django-era jazz group based in the Denver-Boulder metro area, we started writing more and more original music. When we realized that people liked the original songs as much, if not more than, the classic jazz tunes we were playing - something clicked. The music is still jazzy, with a touch of bluegrass, folk, pop and even funk. The name we chose - Paper Moonshine - combines the name of a classic jazz tune "Paper Moon" with a nod towards our folky new sound.

We can still play the crap out of some jazz standards, but we're now choosing to use our powers for awesome instead of classic. It's virtuosity meets dance-able; old meets new; traditional meets edgy. We'll rock out your stage, serenade your happy hour, stand out at your festival. But above all - it's about the music.

"Listening you can't help but feel peaceful. Django has a big heart and yearns to share it." -Seven Days Magazine

8pm -  11pm  Shamwari Tamba! & and Vana Vedu
Shamwari Tamba! is the top teen band at Kutandara Center, a Boulder-based music school where we believe that our music inspires, transforms, and connects us to each other and our world. Our teen program is in its 14th year and the current membership in is just about as good as it gets. Vana Vedu is our slightly younger teen band, but they will pack the house and rock the stage, too!

With the energy and enthusiasm only a group of teens could bring, these musicians continually captivate their audiences with skill and professionalism beyond their years.

8pm - 9 pm  Amelia White
9pm -  11pm  The Aquatic Troupe & Jack and the Bear
Born in Virginia to two Virginians bred in Boston, Amelia graduated from staging plays in her back yard to writing songs as soon as she acquired an acoustic guitar. The writing came quickly and hasn't stopped since. ("I like to think of myself as a writer-song singer instead of singer-songwriter." she says.) She came up through the ranks of Boston's highly competitive coffeehouse scene and discovered how busking in the subway meant making just enough money to get by. Things reached a point as they usually do - when she sought a more conventional job and life, so she moved to Seattle, one of the worst possible destinations if one wants to quit music. A few gigs later, she had a production deal to make a record, and a couple of years after that, she made the move to Nashville, comfortable with the fact that she was a lifer now, and there was no going back. Amelia also recently signed a publishing/TV/Film Sync deal with the upstart Nashville company American Echo Records.

"Ethereal and open hearted, singer-songwriter and guitarist Olivia Mainville and her band The Aquatic Troupe, based in Grand Rapids, are full of surprises. Their uptempo gypsy swing and baroque pop songs accented with punchy horns showcase a vaudeville flair, while gentler compositions soar into spacier landscapes, paring back the band's tendency towards rich sonic layers to reveal Mainville's inspired vocals. Musicians like Beirut, Danny Elfman, and David Bowie have been a major influence, and Bowie's guitar player and bandleader Gerry Leonard even played on their 2015 debut album, Maybe The Saddest Thing. Olivia Mainville and the Aquatic Troupe have made a truly distinctive and unforgettable live show and sound for themselves."

Jack and the Bear is an "Industrial Pop" band from lower east Michigan; conjured up of three siblings and close friends, the group's sound can be related to that of Tom Waits, Felice Brothers, C.W. Stoneking, Bruce Springsteen, Randy Newman, and Disney Soundtracks. With a slogan stating themselves as "The greatest thing you'll ever see, probably." they're a group you won't wanna miss.

Throughout their time as a self-managed (DIY) band, "Jack" have performed at noteworthy music festivals (Bristol Rhythm and Roots, The Frendly Gathering, Nashville PAW Fest...etc), recorded with Grammy award winning artists, engineers and producers (Oz fritz, Doug Sax, Mooka Rennick, Sam Bardfeld), had multiple works placed and aired on hit Viacom network programs such as MTV's Catfish & Teen Mom, formed their own recording studio niche in their hometown of Monroe, MI and have enjoyed the past few years touring extensively across the U.S. anywhere they can to spread the word of "Jack" referring to themselves as "The greatest thing you'll ever see, probably."
