From the desk of Mrs. Lestina

Good Afternoon St.Gabriel Families,

It is exciting to think about how close we are to Spring. We have been enjoying some pretty nice days lately. With the weather getting warmer, please talk to your children about when it is appropriate to take their coats off at recess. We have many students taking off their coats (or asking to) when the temperature is in the high thirties to low forties.

Let’s keep praying for those warm days!!

Update on Fr. Tim:

We have really good news regarding Fr. Tim … Fr. Tim has been cleared to return to St. Gabriel this coming Tuesday. We are so appreciative of the help we receive at St. Gabriel Parish with our retired priests … we are very blessed to not only be able to attend Mass during Fr. Tim’s absence, but to have such meaningful celebrations is a true gift. Fr. Tim will need to continue to monitor a few things, but for the most part he looks to be out of the woods. Thank you all for your prayers … God is Good!

Lent gazette.jpg

Lent:

We began the Lenten season this past Tuesday by burying the Alleluia. Each student made a caterpillar that was put into a jar (chrysalis) and “buried” for the season of Lent. Students will raise the Alleluia on their first day back from Easter break. Their caterpillars in the jar will be transformed into beautiful butterflies and will be displayed throughout our school in celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus.

Our school-wide Lenten project is collecting items for the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. The Milwaukee Rescue Mission serves the homeless and poverty-stricken community in Milwaukee. They are currently in urgent need of several items. For a list of these items, or any information concerning donations, please contact the school office (262-628-1711).

Registration is Open for 2022-2023:

Registration is now open for current families. Remember, registering before March 31 secures your spot and allows you to take advantage of the early registration discount ($250 per student/maximum of $1,000). All registrations can be done online. Please see our website for the registration link.

And did you know about St. Gabriel's New Family Referral Program? Help us spread the word about our school!! If you aren't aware, new families may indicate on their student's application that a current family has referred them to St. Gabriel. The current family will receive a $500 one-time tuition credit for that referral after the new family enrolls their student(s) AND the new student(s) begin the school year.

More information is available on the Admissions page of the school website. If you have any questions about either the registration process or referral program, please contact Celia Meyers at [email protected].

Read-a-Thon:

We kicked off our school Read-a-Thon this week. We began with an all-school read-aloud. Each classroom joined my Google Meet video call and I read the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt. Afterward, our fabulous eighth-grade leaders shared one of their favorite books with one of the classrooms. Ava Strauss is pictured here reading to our 4K students.

This year all proceeds raised from our Read-a-Thon will be put towards our new ELA curriculum, resources, and supplies for all grades. Next year we would like to implement a new ELA curriculum. McGraw-Hill World of Wonders would be used in K4, McGraw-Hill: Wonders would be used in grades K5-5, and IXL digital resources for ELA and Math would be used in grades 1-8.

Spotlight on Students!

Honesty was the Virtue for February in Mrs. Erdmann's religion class. The 8th graders were assigned for their Virtue in Practice unit a choice to write an original song or rap about honesty. Click HERE to see a fun rap video from one of our 8th Graders - Rachel Kohls. Great job, Rachel!

  • Fire Poster Contest:

Congratulations to our Fire Safety Poster Contest winners. These students were recognized by the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin in a virtual meeting on February 23rd. This week they brought home their posters, which were professionally framed, along with a Visa gift card. Thank you to Mrs. Schulteis for organizing our school’s participation in this contest. Congratulations to the following students:

Liam Ciganek - 2nd place out of all 3rd graders

Vivien Collins - 3rd place out of all 3rd graders

Brayden Boehler - 2nd place out of all 4th graders

Marge Hartlund - 2nd place out of all 7th graders

  • Yearbook Cover Winner:

Our eighth graders worked very hard creating designs for our yearbook cover this year. All of the designs were outstanding! It was very difficult choosing just one, however, after tallying the votes, our winner is Charlotte Helm. Congratulations, Charlotte!

Iowa Testing:

The window for Iowa Testing is March 1- 18. Grades 3, 5, and 7 will be taking the test during this time. Teachers will schedule which days and times their class will be taking each section of the test. Testing will be spread out throughout these days. Classes will not be testing all day long. Watch your child’s classroom newsletter for more information.

Dress Code Transition:

Just a reminder, St. Gabriel Parish School will begin to implement the Mass Day Dress Code five days a week, as of the 2022-2023 school year. While it is not required to follow the Mass Day dress code on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, we would like to give families this opportunity to ease their students into this new routine. Please take advantage of this transition time if you are ready to do so. Please refer to the dress code link for more detailed information regarding the dress code for the next school year.

A note from the 2022 Auction committee

Hello parents.

Please consider joining us on Tuesday, March 8th at 7:30 pm in the Parish Council room for our next Auction planning meeting. We will be discussing the live event, raffles, and classroom basket ideas. There is more information about our important classroom baskets included below.

___

Dear Parents,

An important part of our Auction every year is the Class Baskets. It's time to kick off this work for our 2022 Auction and we need your help!

What is a Class Basket?

Each classroom will create and/or contribute a basket to be sold in the virtual Silent Auction. The contribution can be monetary, in-kind donations, or physical items. The kids in each classroom should make something for the basket as an act of service for this important fundraiser. Each teacher will assist in coordinating this activity with the Class Basket Parent Coordinator. We have had many great baskets in the past, and some new basket ideas to put forward.

What is a Class Basket Parent Coordinator?

This family will coordinate with the other families in their child's class and lead activities such as establishing a theme, organizing student participation, work with the teacher, collect donations, and serve as the point of contact for that classroom's Basket.

How to help?

This year's Class Basket Chair will be Amanda Schulteis. Thank you, Amanda, for volunteering for this important role!  If you are interested in coordinating the basket for your child's classroom, please let Amanda know at [email protected]. She will be the point of contact throughout the process.

Class Basket Parent Coordinators to date are:

K4: Holly Macchi - Thank you, Holly!

On behalf of the entire 2022 Auction committee, I appreciate your consideration and participation in this fun and important activity. Class Baskets are always popular items at the Auction and certainly will be again this year!

We are looking for additional volunteers to help us with planning the raffles. You would not be working alone and there are many great ideas that just need some help to come to fruition. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Please contact Connie Helm, 2022 Auction Chair, at [email protected] or (920)636-8526 for more information.

Last weekend our hometown Hawks took the court for their final 8th-grade basketball game. And a doubleheader no less. The boys played some incredible basketball this season and brought home the gold in their final game of the season. Congratulations on an incredible season!

Our 5/6th boy's team opponent was a no-show...so what did they do...made lemonade and played against the Dads! Fun was had by all!

Have you cheered on your Hawks lately?
