Here's all the scintillating news from the Berlin Chamber this month! Enjoy!

Executive Director's Comments
This has been a productive summer for the Chamber. The Bathtub Races were a huge success and our turn out was better than ever. Congrats to all who participated and thank you to all our sponsors! We're anxiously looking forward to and planning the Fiddler's Convention, one of our biggest events of the season, as well as Fall Cruisers. We're hoping to make these events bigger and better than ever as we start moving towards creating new opportunities for networking. We're excited to keep moving onwards and upwards with the coming months, and we value everyone's continued support of the Chamber.

Spotlight on New Businesses
Crush N' Crab
The Chamber warmly celebrated the ribbon cutting for Crush N Crab, a fantastic restaurant that has recently set down its roots in Berlin, taking the place of the historically remembered Boomer's Restaurant at 525 South Main Street. They specialize in varieties of seafood, including shrimp, clams, mussels, and of course, crabs. The name is perfect for their selection of pairings with various "Crushes"-alcoholic beverages usually flavored with liquor and a fruit based juice or liqueur.

Leaky Pete's Oyster Bar and Chophouse
Leaky Pete's recently moved from Cambridge to Berlin at 119 North Main Street and started anew and to great success. They feature great varieties of local seafood, especially oysters, and other local creative cuisine. The two storied building features two bars with local music, as well as outdoor dining on their patio. Some of their other specials include calamari with roasted lemon Aioli, Chipotle pork chop with maple glaze, spicy garlic shrimp and oysters and more. They are a full menu restaurant, kids welcome and they do take reservations. Open Tue-Thu:
11:00 am - 10:00 pm and Fri-Sat:  11:00 am - 11:00 pm.
Uncle's Jon's Soap
Recently Jon Conley took over the space once occupied by Bungalow Love at 12 William Street Berlin, MD 21811and has set to work making all natural, organic hand-made soaps and cosmetic toiletries for men and women.  His products come in many different scents, and he even boasts beard balm, beard oil, mustache wax, body scrubs, candles, surf wax and much more. His approach to making soaps is to eliminate the harsh chemicals made in many commercial products, and therefore spare the body from exposure to them.

Art in the Fields
Berlin is anxiously anticipating the opening of its newest art Gallery, owned by Foster and Lisa Schoch. The gallery is located at 6 South Main Street, Berlin MD 21811. The Gallery provides "20th century original works and high quality lithographs for purchase and enjoyment." Their upcoming show is going to be centered around Andy Warhol, "including pieces from the Marilyn series, the Flower series, the Campbell's Soup series, and the Mao series. " The Gallery promises to bring high quality museum worthy art to our small town.

Fiddler's Convention

The 23rd Annual Berlin Fiddlers Convention is pleased to welcome Bob Perilla and Big Hillbilly Bluegrass to the concert stage Friday Sept 18th and judges table for the competition Sept 19th, 2015.  They will be joined by last year's band competition victors, Such Fools. Comprised of Mickey Justice, Todd Smith, and Dick Morris, they're bound together on a quest for a meaningful musical experience. Amid the vast cultural microcosm known simply as "Delmarva", they are as diverse as their backgrounds.  Join us September 18th-20th, 2015 in the streets of beautiful, historic Berlin, MD for 3 days of fantastic, free, family bluegrass fun featuring arts and food vendors. If you would like to be a sponsor, volunteer, or be a vendor, please go to our website for more information and click events, followed by Fiddler's Convention. Vendor forms are listed on the website. You can also register to play in the competition!

Washington, DC
Bob Perilla has been a pillar of the Mid-Atlantic bluegrass scene for over 20 years. Currently joined by Kevin Church on banjo, Norman Wright on mandolin, Mary Naden on bass, and Jon Glik on fiddle, collectively the ensemble boasts over 125 years of combined musical experience. An exciting blend of hard-driving, traditional bluegrass along with country, folk and original material will please even the most discriminating listeners and make easy converts of those unfamiliar with bluegrass music, a unique American art form.
International veterans of stage, screen and television, "Bob Perilla's Big Hillbilly Bluegrass" performance highlights include a screen appearance in Chris Rock's film "Head of State," a live television appearance with Earl Scruggs, multiple Kennedy Center concerts and a residence at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
At the request of the U.S. Department of State, "Big Hillbilly Bluegrass" has toured Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and the Dominican Republic over the past several years. Most recently BHB spent five weeks in Africa bringing Bluegrass to the peoples of Mauritania, Togo, Congo Brazzaville and the Central African Republic, thus assuring BHB's slot as America's defacto Bluegrass Ambassadors.
Their recordings have achieved widespread critical acclaim. Look for them again in the Ruth Oxenberg-Rob Schumer bluegrass documentary film "Bluegrass Journey," which is available nationwide. "Big Hillbilly Bluegrass" has been entertaining music fans for over 15 years on four continents.

Salisbury, MD
Winners of the 2014 Berlin Fiddlers Convention band competition and openers of the 2015 Berlin Fiddlers Convention Concert
Such Fools is comprised of several of the area's most eclectic troubadours. Mickey Justice, a singer of fine songs, a keen player of most everything and a Fool. He is a highly skilled master of the treble clef and was raised in the hinterlands by a family of Dire Wolves from the fabled village of Frontier Town. He is one of the youngest people ever to achieve the rank of Mandolin Jedi.
Todd Smith, a singer of fine songs, master of all in the realm of the low notes and a Fool. He was raised on the mean streets of Detroit, armed with an upright bass in one hand... and in his other hand, was the rest of that upright bass. As everyone knows that an upright bass is nearly impossible to carry with just one hand. When he is not slaying bass, Todd selflessly manages to keep the matrix safe for all of us. We are all in debt to him.
Dick Morris, a singer of fine songs, distracted noodler of guitar and a Fool. He was seduced at a young age by the rich, yet archaic medium known as the vinyl record album. He is currently making his third attempt at a freshman year studying the mysterious branch of applied physics known as "String Band Theory."

Shakespeare on Main

Deception and desire abound in Shakespeare's classic comedy when Christopher Sly, a tinker tricked into believing himself a nobleman, is treated to a play wherein an ornery and willful woman is "tamed" and men will stop at nothing to claim their love. The familiar story is reimagined through a cast of characters comprised of nine women and one man, who together weave in and out of Shakespeare's layered world to create a fresh and surprising theatrical experience for all audiences.

We are pleased to bring our Fifth Annual Free Shakespeare Tour to over 20 locations throughout Massachusetts and Delmarva in our continued commitment to providing high-quality free and affordable theatre to communities that crave th e performing arts.

All performances begin at 7:30pm. The performances are free and open to the public! Bring your own blanket or beach chair.
