Mrs. Terri Burns
My Story – I was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. I attended elementary school at St. Isaac Jogues, where I eventually taught religion, got married, and had my children baptized. I went to Maine East High School in Park Ridge, Illinois, where my passion for teaching began as a preschool teacher assistant.
I attended Oakton Community College and then Northeastern Illinois University part-time while working full-time as a phlebotomist at Life Source Blood Bank. During my college experience, I minored in Earth Science, which allowed me to take a coastal engineering course in Hawaii. This was amazing and where my strong interest in volcanoes developed.
After receiving my degree, I moved further up into Lake County, Illinois, and worked as a 6th-grade science teacher in Mundelein, Illinois, until my first child was born. We chose for me to put my career on hold and raise our children, which was the best decision.
God had blessed me with 3 beautiful children that I was able to stay home and raise until my 3rd was in kindergarten. I was then hired at Sylvan Learning Center as a teacher and fell in love with teaching again. From that point, I worked for that company for the next 10 years. St. Patrick was my home church, and I became very involved in various ministries there, including being a catechist and Youth Ministry Coordinator.
My family and I stayed in Lake County, Illinois, until 2016 when we decided to move to Wisconsin where I became a 4th-grade catechist for St. Kilian Parish along with substitute teaching in areas districts. I have been a substitute teacher for the Slinger School District and became the full-time building substitute for Addison Elementary. During this time, I built some great relationships with the staff and students and was now ready for my own classroom again.
I received my reciprocal Wisconsin license, and here I found my calling at St. Gabriel’s. I am honored to be here, teaching in my own classroom and to be a part of such a faithful community. To say I am excited is an understatement. God has placed me here, and I am going to run with it!
