St. Gabriel Gazette

Hello St. Gabriel Families,

Check out the following headlines and links to stay up to date on everything happening at St. Gabriel Parish School.

Snow Days/Calendar:

After the unexpected additional 2 days of winter break, we had to take another look at our school calendar.  We had 1 1/2  snow days built into our school calendar and anticipated having to make up any snow days after that.  I am happy to announce that we have learned that we have enough instructional minutes to cover the additional half-day that we needed so we will not need to adjust our school calendar.  WHEW!!!  As a result, Friday, May 26th will still be a day off for the students.

Winter Weather Reminders:

We all knew that the time would eventually come when we would have to talk about the cold temperatures and snow.  That time is upon us.  The snow is beautiful but it comes with some additional safety precautions.  Here are a few reminders about our winter weather protocols.

  1. Please make sure that your children come prepared to go outside for recess each day during winter.  They will need boots, hats, and mittens.   If the temperature, including the wind chill, is below 10 degrees, recess will be indoors.
  2. Please remind your children that playing and building in the snow at school is ok, however, they cannot throw snow.  Unfortunately, for safety reasons, snowball fights will need to be saved for home.
  3. If we need to close school due to inclement weather, a notification will be sent to parents via email and text.  The notification will also be posted on our website and Facebook page.  In addition, we will report our school closing on WISN 12, and FOX 6.

Gym Shoes:

Please make sure that your child/ren has gym shoes to wear on gym days.  These should not be the shoes that they are wearing outside for recess.  We do not want salt tracked in from outside ruining our gym floor.

Please Help:

Tuesday morning we had a blockage in our septic line which hampered the usage of our restrooms for about an hour or so.  Everything has been resolved but we need to remind our students not to flush anything down the toilets (including feminine hygiene products) other than toilet paper.  Please talk to your children at home and help us keep things running smoothly.

Thank You!

Car-Line:

Just a couple of reminders regarding drop-off/pick-up:

  1. Please remember to have your sign (family name) visible in the windshield so that we may have students ready when you pull up to the doors.
  2. Please have your children exit from the passenger side of the vehicle in order to avoid the cars that are coming to park in the lot.
  3. Please do not get out of your vehicle.  We have staff members outside ready to help students who need assistance getting out of the car.

We need everyone's cooperation in order to keep the car line moving in the safest and most efficient manner possible.

Thank You

After-School Care:

If you are in need of after-school care for your child, please remember to complete the January calendar.

In order to be able to provide adequate supervision we ask that parents sign their children up at least one day in advance.  Any changes should be reported to the office that morning.  Due to staffing requirements, we may not be able to accommodate last-minute requests.  If your child is not on the after-school care list they should not be staying after school!  Supervision is required for any student in the building after hours.

After-School Care Sign Up

We are searching for an adult to help supervise After School Care students each Thursday and the first and third Tuesday of the month.  Anyone interested must have completed the Safeguarding Training course and a current background check.  This is a paid position.  If you are interested, please contact the school office at (262) 628-1711.

Welcome, Sr. Therese Marie:

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Sr. Therese Marie Yank.  Her first day at St. Gabriel was yesterday.  Sr. Therese Marie is transitioning into teaching our middle school math classes.  She will be working with Mrs. Mancuso until January 20th and then will take over the classes on her own.  We are so happy that she chose us!

Sr. Therese Marie will also be working with Mrs. Erdmann in our middle school religion classes and will be a member of our school’s faith formation committee.  Her invaluable insights and knowledge will help strengthen our religion program throughout the school. We have been blessed!

Grades 5-8: World Cultures/Languages Club: Session 2

We are excited to offer a second session of our World Cultures/Languages Club.  This after-school club has been designed for both students new to the club and those who wish to return to learn more about the German language/culture as well as other languages/cultures.

It will, once again, be led by Hubertus resident Mike Oemichen.  Mike has spoken German since he was six, and has a B.A. in German from Hamline University in Minnesota.  Additionally, Mike has used German extensively throughout his professional career and has experience teaching language to middle school students.  This 6-week session will focus on German culture and language.  If your child would like to learn more about Germany and start to learn the German language, they can do it right here at St. Gabriel.

School Garden Project - Volunteers Needed:

I know it sounds crazy, but we are starting to think about spring planting in our St. Gabriel Gardens! Mr. Thuecks, our 5th-grade teacher, would like to get volunteers who are interested in helping our gardens grow at the school and parish grounds. Some ideas that are being planned are a vegetable garden that the kids plant, a butterfly garden, Monarch Butterfly Project, an outside learning space, an updated walking path, tree planting, kids planting their own pumpkins, and a living rosary with flowers. If you have a green thumb or think you could be a resource to help us with donations, please complete THIS FORM as soon as possible. Mr. Thuecks would like to begin meeting on a regular basis starting in January to make sure things are ready to go by May.

"Thank you for your consideration!"  - Mr. Thuecks
