Great News!! We have a music teacher!!:

Mr. Tom DeMers has been filling in for the past two weeks in our music classes and has enjoyed the time with our students so much that he has accepted the position for the remainder of the school year. We are very excited to have Tom join the staff. He brings an abundance of excitement, experience, and a fresh perspective of music to our students. Mr. DeMers has earned a lifetime teacher license in the state of Wisconsin and has a background in music. His daughter Taytum is in our K5 class.

Staffing Needs:

Due to the increase in our enrollment and in order to continue to meet the needs of our students, we will be beginning a search for a classroom aide to work with our students. This aide would work closely with Mrs. Kohls in our RtI program to help support the intervention needs of our elementary students. This would include one-on-one and small group instruction as well as helping teachers in the classroom with whole group instruction. This position is five days a week from 8:00-3:15. The position may be split (3 days a week/2 days a week) depending on availability and interest. Experience in education is preferred but not required. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Kim Lestina in the school office (klestina@sgabriel.org or 628-1711).

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

Don’t forget to sign up for parent-teacher conferences. This year the sign-up is on iVolunteer. Please see the links below and the codes that were shared with you via classroom newsletters yesterday. Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 24 from 11:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. and Friday, October 25 from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m..

Medication at School:

We have seen an increase in students coming to the office requesting medication. The distribution of non-prescription medicine at school should not be a routine/regular practice. A student should not be in school if they need medicine to make it through the day. Prescription medicine must be accompanied by a Prescription Medicine Form that is completed and signed by their doctor (see links below). If your child has an allergy and requires an epi-pen or other medication, an Allergy Action Plan should be completed, signed by their physician, and returned to the office.

Reminder: Students should be fever-free (without medication) and have no instances of vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school after an illness. If they are experiencing discomfort (headaches, persistent cough, sneezing, etc.) they should stay home. If your child sees a physician for their illness, please remember to request a medical excuse for their absence from school. This should be turned in to the office upon their return.

Below is the school/archdiocese policy regarding the distribution of medication at school as well as the links to the appropriate forms.

Dress Code Reminder:

The cold weather is coming! October 15th is the last day to wear shorts to school. Please make sure your child(ren) has switched their uniform clothes from summer to fall/winter weather items. Please see the link to our dress code for more details.

After-School Care Learning Program:

St. Gabriel School’s After School Program is for students in all-day K4 through 8th grades. The program runs from 3:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day and costs $12.00 a day. This program is on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum number of students for the program is 30 students.

Students must be picked up promptly by 5:30 p.m. A $5 late fee will be charged for late pick-ups.

Due to staffing requirements, we may not be able to accommodate last-minute attendance requests. If space is available, a fee of $5 will be charged for same-day additions to the After School Care list. Since adequate staffing is arranged in advance, same-day cancellations to the program are non-refundable.

DID YOU KNOW...

ARCHDIOCESE OF MILWAUKEE SCRIP POLICIES:

In order to qualify as a fundraiser under IRS rules and to avoid the possible incurring of unrelated business income tax liability for the parish/school, uncompensated volunteer hours must make up at least 85% of the total number of hours it takes to run the scrip program. However, the parish/school is ultimately responsible for the program. Scrip volunteers are accountable to the parish/school staff employees charged with oversight responsibilities. Paid parish employees may perform some of the tasks, but their involvement should not exceed 15% of the total activities involved in the operation of the Scrip program. It is advisable to have logs or diaries maintained by volunteers and paid staff to track the time spent on the scrip program.

Box Tops:

Last year from July 2023 to June 2024, we raised $360.30 just by scanning shopping receipts with Box Top products.

From July 1, 2024 - present we have raised $102.50 from the Box Tops program. Box Tops are worth $.10 each and they add up fast! Twice a year, our school receives a check to help pay for whatever we need - equipment, supplies, or experiences the kids love! Did you know you can now connect your Walmart account for even easier fundraising? You can earn cash for your school without scanning receipts! See the app for more details.

NOTE - Adults who work exclusively with other adults do not need to undergo safeguarding measures. However, if a minor is involved at any point, safeguarding protocols as outlined by the Archdiocese must be followed. All volunteers who volunteer during school hours are required to be certified in the Archdiocese Safe Guarding All of God's Family Class. You can visit this webpage for more details.

Per the update to the handbook regarding Volunteers, pg 12

VOLUNTEERS (4140) Volunteer service is a core value of a Catholic parish and school community and should be both encouraged and publicly acknowledged. The administration at St. Gabriel parish and school strongly believes that parental involvement and participation in school activities is a vital way to have a direct positive impact on your child’s school experience. Volunteers enable our school to run more smoothly, operate within our annual budget, and offer more family-friendly events. So that St. Gabriel can achieve our goals, we ask that each family volunteer at least 10-15 hours during the school year. Gratitude and appreciation for your volunteerism cannot be given with something of value-in-kind for your service. By definition, a volunteer is someone who gives services without any expressed or implied promise of remuneration.

We encourage every committee who has volunteer opportunities to email Nikki Packee their needs to this email nikki.packee@stgabrielhubertus.org. Please reach out, should you have questions, or visit this URL to volunteer!!! #manyhandsmakeworklight

KEEP SCROLLING

A lot is happening at the School and Parish!!

In the Classroom!

Our first-grade students had a fun and educational time learning about plants in their PLTW science unit! To bring their lesson to life, they explored apples, made delicious homemade applesauce, and even used math skills to measure ingredients. After all the learning and teamwork, they enjoyed the tasty treat they created! What a wonderful way to blend science, math, and a tasty snack!

At St. Gabriel Parish School, we believe that small acts of kindness and service are essential for all of our students. Our first graders have been busy this week! Recently they practiced their writing skills by creating heartfelt thank-you notes for the new Milwaukee police recruits. One batch went to the Menomonee Falls Police Department and the second batch went to the Germantown Police Department. Along with their notes, Miss Littel delivered some sweet treats to show our gratitude for their service! A big thank you to our heroes for keeping our community safe.

Our second graders are so excited to kick off their writing project with new pen pals in Wausaukee, WI! During writing class, they’ve started crafting their first letters and can’t wait to get to know their new friends. What a fun way to practice writing skills and build connections!
