VBCF's Response to ACS Guidelines

The American Cancer Society’s recently revised breast cancer screening guidelines may make sense from a strictly statistical point of view. But listening to the personal breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment stories of Virginians since 1991 and how so many attribute their survivorship to early detection either by the best screening tool that currently exists – mammograms – or an individual’s or clinician’s discovery of abnormal breast symptoms, it is hard to connect these personal narratives to the scientific support for these guidelines.

Open Enrollment Period for Health Insurance

Open enrollment this year for the health insurance marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act is November 1, 2015-January 31, 2016. This is the time to choose health insurance or make changes to your current insurance. A checklist to help with decision making is available for download in English and Spanish on VBCF’s website. Save the Date: Advocating for Your Breast Health 
VBCF will host “Advocating for Your Breast Health” at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News on February 27, 2016 from 9am-Noon. This event will feature local medical professionals speaking on breast screening and density, genetic testing, and the latest research trends. Registration will open in early January with more details to come.

Congratulations to  Meg Helsley, MSN, RN, AOCNS , Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Cancer Center of Henrico Doctors' Hospital and recipient of  VBCF’s 2015 Sherry Kohlenberg Healthcare Service Award . Since 1995, VBCF has presented the Kohlenberg Award annually to recognize individuals employed in the healthcare field who exhibit a deep and abiding commitment to the fight against breast cancer.
